I live in southeast Texas where there are usually never any ticks. Apparently this year they have decided to flourish and I can't seem to keep them off the dogs. I was using Advantage which only controls fleas so I switched to Advantix which is supposed to work for both. I has been two months now since I started using the Advantix and I have been treating my yard and house for ticks (with a pet safe bug and tick killer) and I am still finding 4-6 ticks daily per dog. Now I have 5 dogs so this is alot of ticks!!! I have even found 2 on me one crawling on my pants and another actually "on" me!!! I am so grossed out and I was just curious What in the heck am I doing wrong. The grass is kept short and there are not too many trees around either. HElP me before this drives me insane!
I had a problem with Advantix too. And Frontline did nothing (for my dogs). I was told on a holistic forum that ticks like sweet blood. Dogs with weak immune systems have sweet blood.
At that time I was only starting raw diet with my dogs. I was told if I continued, their immune systems would build, their blood would be bitter, and ticks would not bite.
Well, it's been about 6 months now, and I have not seen a tick in at least 4 months. And they are really bad here. I find them now and then on myself, but never the dogs. Once in a while I spray them with Sentry Pro Flea & Tick Spray.
Well that is interesting "food for thought". I have been considering Raw for a while but I am not real sure where to get started. I know there are lots of threads on here for raw diets so I will just have to look them up. I am sure on cost either. My dogs eat Canidae now and between the five of them go through 2 - 2 1/2 40# bags a month. So I am not sure if it would really cost much more.
I wish there was a quick fix or a miracle cure for this. I can't wait for winter when these things just die off!
Bippy, I know many people that prefer the spray type preventatives over the advantix. Advantix goes into the blood stream and is really no good for your dogs anyway. The Sentry Pro spray you can spray once a week or so, depending upon if your dogs swim or not. Before the raw diet I found it to work well. I live in a heavily wooded area of NY where lyme disease is a big problem, and I didnt see many ticks at all while using it.
Last summer we have a tick problem, we had moved in with hubbys parents for the summer and they live in the middle of the woods. well not totaly in the middle but kinda its a small wooded town.
Anyway the ticks were bad on rocky and nohing i was dong worked. I stoped by a farm supply shop because they sell ducks and I like ducks, anyway I saw some flea and tick drops, i think they were called Big O. I got some and put it on rocky, the next morning we found dead ticks all over the place and not a single one on rocky.
I'm gonna trade this life for fortune and fame I'd even cut my hair and change my name
We have ticks here as well. I also had a HORRIBLE time trying to keep them off of Faeden. I would have to check him everytime we come inside. I noticed in one of LifeofRiley's posts that she recommended Sentry ProSpray. I gave it a try, and boy was she right! I have only found one tick on him since I started using that stuff. I would highly recommend it to anyone.
