Puppy/Dog Food
We are trying to decide which is the best food for our puppy. We have a 4 1/2 month old Australian Cattle Dog (Blue Heeler) right now we're feeding him the "no by-product" foods by Nutro, the past couple of days he's been really gassy, so we were thinking it had something to do with the food.

Personally, I won't feed anything coming from a bag labeled dog food. Mine get a raw diet.

Innova is the best in my opinion. I like that it's baked and that the first three ingredients are meat. Evo is good if you want a dry dog food that is closest to raw and contains no grains. I also like Eagle Pack Holistic Selects Chicken and Rice - it contains a lot of good ingredients and they add digestive enzymes to the food after cooking; enzymes which are removed during the extrusion process. I do not recommend any dog food that you get from the grocery store; any food that contains wheat, corn or soy as these can lead to allergies in your dog and are used as cheap fillers.

we have just switched our pup from the nutro natural choice puppy food to the innova puppy food. i prefer innova's ingredients over nutro's.

your pups gassiness could very well be due to the food, or how quickly you switched foods on him. try a different brand and switch over slowly, over a 2 week period of time and see if that makes a difference.

when we first got him (when he was 2 1/2 months old) we had switched him to this same food and he was fine, but he was taken from us and put on benefull and now when we get him back he's "gassy" so i'm thinking it may be his anal glands??? we had a dashound with the same problem and ended up being his anal glands.

anal glands do cause an odor, but do not themselves cause gas. if he smells "fishy" then yes it probably is his anal glands. but if it is definite gas then i would suspect the food. beneful is a lousy food so intestinal issues arising from eating that wouldnt surprise me.
