My Jack Russell cross Border Terrier bitch is now 9 months old, (we resued her, hence the cross in her, when she was just 3 weeks old!) she recently had her first heat, aprox. 12th Aug it started. i just wanted to know a bit more about the process after the first cycle. she is still the same in herself, no changes in behaviour, however she cried alot and followed me around all through her heat. Seemed like she was in a bit of discomfort and she just wanted to be cuddled and kept warm at all times. her nipples have now started to become more noticable, not 'squished' into her belly, before her cycle (bad example i know lol) i dont really know how to describe them really. could anyone help, i just wanted to know, she's my first pup and i've only ever had rescues that have been male or females that are older so never experienced changes in a pup. Thank you for any help in advance, be nice! xx
Who ever told you that was incorrect. Each time a female has an estrus cycle she runs the risk of infection. And with each cycle scar tissue is formed in the uterus. I am sure she is probably fine, but spaying before the heat cycle prevents these things as well as accidently breedings. I would be making her appointment ASAP. Going through a heat cycle I am sure you have found is not so pleasant for either you or the dog.
But in regards to your first question, I have never had any of my girls personalitly changed by having a heat cycle. Sometimes spaying will mellow out a terrier a bit, just make sure you keep her active and in proper weight. So many people blame spaying for there dogs being over weight. Not true either. Over weight that is not a medical issue is from over eating and lack of exercise. Just like in humans. LOL
He's your friend, your partner, your defender your dog.You are his life, his love, his leader. He will be yours faithful and true to the last beat of his heart. You owe it to him to worthy of such devotion
buddysmom, I can see where it may have been totally new and different for you to have a puppy, as opposed to an adult dog, and that the heat cycle would be a strange new phenomenon if you've never had to deal with it before. You can make an appt to have her spayed now, and won't have to worry about it again. She was probably just following you around because she's so attached to you, since you are her guardian angel, after all! Good luck with her.
Windy Valley and Pen2 thank you for your advice and I think that, Windy Valley, if you aren't a vet, you must have been in a past life; very wise. Thank you for replying both of you, you have been a great help. x
