I need some advice on what to do with Zoe. It seems that although she was getting tired of nursing the puppies, now that I don't need her to nurse them (at all much less, so often) She wants to be in there, nursing them! Well, HOW am I supposed to let her milk dry up if she CONTINUALLY wants to go in and nurse!?!?!?!? ( Oh and mind you, it's not actually nursing - the pups would starve if I didn't feed them anyway, because she's only in there for about one whole minute!!!) To top it all off, I've have to add the next and final layer to the front of the whelping box, in order to keep the puppies in because they are getting too big and were crawling over it - but NOW, it's a TEENY TINY bit too high for ZOE. (which was the point!) and she barks when she can't get back out! Because of course, she screws up her courage and manages to jump IN - but then doesn't want to jump out! So then we have an argument, I am telling her to "come" and to "jump" and she's barking at me and looking at me like I grew two heads! I CANNOT pick her up as she weighs too much - so we have this argument and about 15 minutes into it, she decides fine! And jumps over!!! WHAT?!?!?!? WHY, WHY, WHY do we have to do this 3 times a day and once in the middle of the night?!?!? The puppies ?? - Doing great! Eating and drinking well, no problems, could care less about nursing - well until she's in there and they are like wow! WOO HOO ! Forgot about these! But otherwise weaning them has been as easy as pie.....
I have had mothers do the same and I do not ever force a mother away from the babies. I have had those few times when mommy wants her pups up until 8 weeks or just about when they go home.
She nurses less and less but may still want them. Her body will automatically decrease the milk production as she nurses less. That's not something you need to worry about. In fact, if she is still producing a lot and the pups are not nursing to get the milk out, she could develop Mastitis. Nature takes it's course, mommies know.
They are 5 weeks and one day. I'm not forcing her to stay out, just wanting to know what to do and venting! Like you said I don't want her developing mastitis, so wanted to know what to do to prevent it. Thanks!
5 weeks already? wow time flies!!! Yep, great job, just let her keep nursing as she wants and dont worry about it. She will loose interest as they continue to grow up. Every now and then I have one that wants to be with the pups for 8 weeks, most though do finally want to go back to being a doggie LOL...
congrats again on the litter. Glad all are doing so beautifully.
LOL, Sounds like you have a really good mommie on your hands. My Brooklyn is the same way she nursed her litter speratically untill they left some were still snacking at 14 weeks old! Then the of two that I kept from that litter my boy would still attempt to nurse untill about 14 months old every time mom would roll over when they were playing, boys, ziesh! Ha ha so don't worry about it, as Savanah said she will wean them off in her own time. As long as she is not sleeping in there and letting them get a full meal like when they were pups there is no nutritional concern. If you start to cut back her food to one half the regular amount it will help her milk to dry up and wean the pups faster as well ;)
I prefur to have my Bordeaux with fur instead of a cork and bottle ;)
