my nephews called me the other day they are sixteen and eighteen they are getting a shih tzu i told them they are going to need a lot of grooming wouild some one give some grooming advise to me that i couild sent them
Make sure they are brushed daily with a slicker brush as their hair is long and can get matted easily. If you let the mat get right down to the skin, it's painful to remove and you have to shave it. Also wipe his eyes regularly as they tend to tear. It is also good to shave around the butt area as their hair can block their waste from coming out. And it keeps it cleaner! If you want to keep the maintenance at a minimum, have the groomer cut him short all over (maybe keep his face puffy) so it doesn't get matted too easily. However, this means more trips to the groomer so you can decide what to do. They're non-shedding which is a blessing but they are high maintenance in terms of grooming. And daily teeth brushing as small dogs tend to have dental problems. Also, shih-tzu's eyes stick out a bit so you have to be careful to not poke them.
In order to really enjoy a dog, one doesn't merely try to train him to be semi human. The point of it is to open oneself to the possibility of becoming partly a dog. ~Edward Hoagland
