This is making me nervous a little bit, even though my hubby and went on internet and found some info. Just wondering if anyone here has had a similar experience. I took Cody to the vet last Friday for his check up and shot, can not remember what shot, I think maybe temper and the vet changed his heartworm med. to Advantage Multi. because we found 3 fleas on him, have not found any more fleas but today when he did a big job my hubby (how lucky for him as he has a weak stomach) saw little whitish worms crawling, they were about 1" long. I have noticed Cody bothering with his rear end for about 3 days but this is the first we noticed worms. We are assuming, after doing some reading, that the Advantage is causing the worms to come out (we didn't know he had them). I will be calling the Vet first thing in the morning but want to know if there is something I should be doing in the mean time. If we are reading and understanding the info on the box and on the internet that the advantage multi can be used to get rid of the worms not cause the worms as I first thought was a possibility. I have never had a dog with fleas before, let alone worms so I am just a little upset about this. Thanks for any help anyone has.
I personally am not familliar with that heartworm med, but i use sentinal as heartworm med and i know that it is suppose to worm them as well. So my guess would be that he had the worms all along and the new heartworm med is deworming him. I would take a stool sample to the vet and they will probably give you another dewormer.
Thank you for the advice. We always pick up his poo right away. I don't think there is a pair of pants or a jacket that doesn't have at least two baggies in them !
Another question comes to mind: Can humans get these worms from their pet? Cody sleeps in our bed at night, he sleeps on top of the covers. He starts out in our bed then moves around to different rooms and comes back off and on. I did just wash the top cover that he lays on about 2 days ago.
We talked with vet office this morning, the office girl said she would get back with us after she talked with the vet but took my hubbies info and felt he was correct but she would call later if we needed to bring specimen in (which he wanted to do in the first place) well she did get back with us but a little too late for us to be able to get specimen there today so first thing in the morn. I will collect another one and take it in I was trying to avoid having to do this on Friday as we are leaving for the weekend for a camping trip and that is the only day I have to get everything ready, but my poochie does come first so I'll just have to figure my time differently :) I knew people could get worms just didn't know about getting them from our pets. As Cody sleeps on our bed I was a little concerned that eggs might drop on the covers and get onto us! Yuckieeee ! ! !
