i want to buy my first cat. i was wondering should i buy the accessories(like scratchpost, litter box and food dishes stuff like that)for the cat before i actually buy the cat or should i wait. if there is anything else i need to know as a first time owner please let me know.
You do need to have those things ready before you bring the cat home. But depending on what type of cat you want to get, if you are buying it from a breeder you should consult with the breeder about what things you need to buy that are best for your kitten. For instance, tiny kittens need a litterbox that is small with low sides and no cover and then you would switch to a bigger one when the cat is older. They also recommend that you start the kitten with the litter that it is familiar with at the breeder or shelter or wherever. Which dishes would be right also depend on the size of the kitten. For a scratching post, anything made of sisal rope is awesome. Mine love it and it also has a diferent texture so it won't teach them to claw rugs or furniture. A scratching post made of carpet makes them get used to the feel of carpet in their claws. I had a cardboard one as well, but my girls don't care for it. And don't waste any money on a bed until you see what the kitty likes because mine have never used one of the beds I bought and Bailey used the covered bed as a litterbox by mistake. I have wasted too much money on accessories because I went crazy buying things before the kittens came home. Mine are 6 months old and 4 months old right now but they each came home at 8 weeks. Teeny tiny Persians!
