we recently became owners of a year old terripoo- i have never had a smaller( than say border collie) breed dog -it is getting cold out-and i am wondering when/how to dress my pooch to go out to do her biz?
i am serious in this question- if it is cold enough for me to be in a coat or sweater should she , as well?
(i know about protecting her from sidewalk salt and antifreeze.)
That's cute! I do not dress my Huskies but when I puppy sit for Daisy (small Beagle) I dress her when she starts to shiver or the temp is below 40 degrees, then a sweater is put on. They can handle a little more cold then we can.
If she is just in and out I don't put it on unless it is really cold, I then put her parka on.
I'm not sure what a terripoo is, but I have a dog that is a chihuahua x rat terrier mix. He doesn't have a lot of hair, and almost none on parts of his belly. So he gets cold very easily.
If dogs are feeling very cold, they will shiver. So you will know.
Mine is a wimp, he wears a vest/sweater/jacket if the temp is below around 60 F. I keep it on him all the time except at night when he's sleeping, but he has a bunch so I can cycle through and wash them.
Without clothing, he will refuse to go out the dog door and I might even see him shivering in the house.
I have a small basset (38 lbs) and she has been shivering since the temps dropped into the 40's at night. We have to keep a sweater on her inside the house.
During the winter both girls (beagle & basset) have a selection of sweaters, jackets and even rain coats. Both girls must wear coats once it gets cold outside and they have no problem with that.
I would suggest getting a sweater and a coat to see which your dog likes better. Beagle doesn't like sweaters unless it is subzero out. Basset likes either a coat or sweater at the first hint of cold. I also restrict outside time when the temps are low teens and below zero.
I have 3 small dogs myself and I do put coats on them in the winter. They do get very cold and will wait at the door for me to put their coats on. This will be Louies (7 month old maltese) first winter but i do have a coat for him- and Daisy (1 year old maltese/bichon mix) she loves her winter coat and then Bentley ( almost 2 years old toy poodle/bichon mix) and hes the one that is cold year round lol Like right now hes wearing his sweater and wont let me take it off, he just got his hair cut a week or so ago and its pretty short so hes cold with the weather getting colder so he wears a sweater inside and out- But the other 2 also got hair cuts and arent cold like Bentley- I did buy doggie boots to last year but they walk funny in them and just try to get them off, Bentley has very sensitive feet and crys alot in the winter with the snow on his feet- So maybe this year i can keep his boots on, But yes i do dress my dogs for the winter snowy months-
