How do you wean your small breed pups? I have read some info on doing it. I read you can just take puppy food and soften it with water. I read you can use a blender to mix puppy food and puppy formula and water, this is the one I have been doing. How long should you do it? Any other info/experience you have?
How old are they now? If they're already eating food with formula on it, I'm guessing 3-4 weeks, which is about right. As their little teeth get sharper, and as the mom starts to run away from them, you can feed them more, and lessen the liquid. You don't have to put it in a blender, just make sure it's good and mushy; so they don't choke.
They will be 6 weeks on Saturday. They have been eating puppy mush since 4 weeks old. First I chop up the puppy food in the blender then I add the Step2 puppy formula and water. I am making it kinda thick now. They have had a mouth full of teeth for a couple weeks. When I noticed the teeth and Madde spending more time away from them I started them on the mush. But my blender is old and just went out. Can I just use puppy food with water? Or do they still need the Step2 puppy formula? They eat the whole bowl of food now. I feed them 2 or 3 times a day, more if they whine or bark like they are hungry. Is that enough? They still nurse on Madde a couple times a day.
What breed are they? Unless they are one of the super tiny breeds--that you should be keeping longer--like Yorkie, maltese, or Chihuahua's, they should be fine with wetted down dry food.
I personally add a ton of water, micro-wave it, stir it, and let it cool. It basically becomes the consistency of soggy cereal. I continue that until they leave and I tell people first taking home the puppies wet down the food. In fact, all my dogs get their food like that. Probably not good for their teeth, but they like eating it a lot better.
I just took whatever puppy food you are feeding them (kibble-wise) and measure out. Then pour in hot water and let soak. When the kibble gets completely soft, I served it to them. They really should be able to eat that now, and actually they should be able to eat it hard, too, but I was paranoid. They let me know - LOL! They were upstairs one night and ran over and started eating the other's food! LOL!
Mom24dogs, sorry, I did'nt realize they're that old already. You can lessen the formula even more, and feed them more, they could be weaned if Madde felt like not feeding them. Just go by the recommended feeding amount, and if there's a bigger breed in the mix give a little extra. I'm not sure what breed they are.
Oh ok. So I guess I went a little overboard with the puppy formula puppy chow mix. I read that, so that is what I have been doing. Well the way you all are saying sounds much easier. That is why I asked. Because I also read about just wetting down the puppy chow.
The pups are getting taller now. The one pup weighs 3lb 13oz and the other pup wieghs 4lb 1oz. You can see that the second pup is gunna be bigger, her head is bigger than the first pup. She is taller too.
The Momma is a Min Pin (I have her) and the daddy is a Xolo (atleast that is what they told me.)
I would just start putting their food in a round cake pan(they are easy for pups to access) and add warm water and let it soften. I think at 6 weeks you can stop with the milk replacer. I add a bit of Gerber baby rice cereal just to keep the mixture from turning to cement. No need to use the blender anymore. And I never feed puppies puppy food, only a good quality adult food. Puppy food can cause them to grow to quickly which can cause permanant damage.

Xoloitzcuintli? Do the pups have fur? Not trying to be a smart aleck, just wondering. I was told a Xolo is also known as Mexican Hairless. Best wishes with the pups. Sounds like they've got you spoiling them already. lol
3Sibes: Yes that is right. They do have have hair. I searched all over the internet and found a coated Xolo. I found a few that looked like a Min Pin as a puppy. I didnt see the adult size like that. They are black, Diamond has a small white spot on her chest, and Sparkles has a bigger white spot on her chest and white feet and a small white mark on her chin.
You can take mom completely away at this point, give them some puppy chow with water in it. I would run the sink on hot hot and put it over the food, let it set for a while until it get soggy and make sure it is not too hot for them and give it to them that way. Also, be sure you are offering them water.
If mom gets too full, you can express the milk yourself or let puppies suck a little to relieve some of that pressure. Do not do too much or she will fill right back up. Check her often to make sure she is not getting mastitis and is in pain.
Good luck. I love the little black and white one peeking over the edge. Cuties!
Ok. I gave them thier first puppy chow food softend with water. Before I could give it to them they started eating the dog chow. It was cute cause one puppy was sitting all the way in the bowl. I was watching them to make sure they were chewing and stuff. Then I gave them thier puppy food and they ate it up.
I keep Madde(mom) in the kennel with the puppys at night time and when I leave the house. Should I not be doing that anymore? I also keep her in there cause I dont wanna leave her free in the house cause she will potty. Should I keep them apart now? She was showing food dominance to her girls. She growled at them when they came to close to the bowl she was eating out of. And the last few nights she has acted like she didnt wanna be in the cage with them. I just thought she wanted to sleep in our bed.
More than likely she's just getting a little tired of them. I would start seperating them. At that age, I still let Zoe go see them and be with them if she wanted to, although most of the time she didn't. She had more or less "obligatory" meetings with them. By 7, 8 weeks I HAD to keep them apart because they would nurse and she would let them and they were going to new homes soon....
Yeah it was nice having them eat regular food. Much easier.
So I shouldnt leave them together anymore? She stays away from them all day, except when I let the puppies run around the house, then she plays with them and stuff. Other than that, she pays them no attention. She isnt that protective of them anymore either. My son can pick them up with no problem from her now. That is good. But it wont hurt to keep them together either right?
I don't have enough experience one way or the other, but as it stands right now - I can't leave her alone with the one I'm keeping. He almost 12 weeks old. She now plays a little too rough for me (even though its probably not that bad) and is CONSTANTLY trying to paw him, or stand over him to get him to lay down (not only mom thing, but dominance) BUT she also is trying to clean him from top to bottom and all he wants to do is go play....
I don't know. I don't trust her to know when it is enough, so I can't leave them together.
I can't imagine it's a good thing that she growls at them when she is eating and they come to eat. Mine never did that, as a matter of fact for a while there, she would eat, then thrown up, full kibble -obviously softened- for her babies. LITERALLY. The minute they came upstairs, she would walk over to her bowl, eat and then throw up and they would eat it. Eventually I had to discipline her in order to get her to stop.
Well its weird. They will eat out of the bowl together one minute, then the next she growls a little. Mostly when the pups are bouncing around when she is trying to eat. And she will nose peck them. Maybe she is just telling them to settle down? I dont know.
