Austin Patterson posed as a good samaritan, adopting unwanted pets- but grateful families were unwittingly handing over their innocent animals to a depraved serial torturer and killer. The 19-year-old duct taped the legs of three cats he adopted, then slit their throats - and finally battered them to death, the charge horrified cops who arrested him. And in another even more sickening case, a witness told police he caught Patterson sawing off the head of a cat in the bathtub- and found mangled feline bodies swinging from trees. An investigator said “it made my blood run cold”. The horrors came to light on September 16, when a passerby saw Patterson torturing three cats in a wooded area in Universal City, Texas. All three had their front and back legs bound together with duct tape, they’d all had their throats cut and there was some head trauma- they’d been battered. Patterson admitted he’d used Craigslist to adopt the animals. The unsuspecting people he got them from thought he was a good person. One of the cat owners said Patterson spent an hour in their home, holding their pet on his lap and telling them how beautiful it was. “ They thought it was going to a wonderful home.” But the cat ended up being tortured and killed in the most horrifying way possible. After word broke of Patterson’s arrest, his former roommate in nearby San Antonio came forward to accuse him of more blood curdling crimes. Patterson repeatedly told the roommate “he despised cats and wanted them all dead”. The roommate found some shoe laces missing- and later discovered they’d been used to hang several mangled cats from trees. On June 25, the roommate went upstairs to the bathroom and “observed Patterson on his knees... wearing gloves and sawing off a cats head.” After kicking out Patterson, the roommate found three containers - each holding a cats tongue. “The roommate also stated that Patterson has a black box filled with knives and other instruments, stating that it looked like a surgeon’s bag of equipment.” If convicted, Patterson faces up to six years imprisonment in the first case. The only good news: police found an orange kitten and a small puppy- both adopted- alive in Patterson’s home. Detective Vitacco believes “they were the next to be slaughtered.” Both have now been re-adopted into loving homes.
Don't you think someone like that is mentally ill? I don't think people in their right mind do that sort of thing. I think that there needs to be more mental health programs and less of this sort of thing would be happening.
I also can't believe his former roommate didn't say anything right away. This has to stop, I read and hear about stories just like this every month. They're terrible. I don't know how anyone would even have the stomach and heart to do this!
I'm sure he is in a mental institution now. I don't think the issue is that there weren't enough mental health programs to put him in one so much as that nobody knew until now about what he was doing. Except the roommate-- maybe he was AFRAID to tell after seeing what dude is capable of.
