while I was at college today my mom babysat my chihuahua crystal, well while I was gon my mom accidently stepped on her back left foot. it don't look swollen, and it didn't break any nails or anything like that but crystal wont put any weight on that foot. she also keeps licking it.
so I'm not sure what to do. should I just take her to the vet just in case or should I let her just rest for a while and see if she starts using it again.
Take her to the vet and have an X-ray taken. It's REALLY easy for toy breed dogs to break a leg. If it's not set right away it will heal funny and may require more medical care to correct.
They don't always act like people with injuries. I had a puppy break his own leg (he was racing around a room and forgot to hit the brakes, slid into a wall JUST right, and broke his leg) and the day he did it, he cried for about 3 minutes and then wouldn't put weight on it. I didn't think it was broken either - but when they did X-rays the break was pretty clear.
I'd keep her off it if you can and take her to your vet first thing (Emergency Clinic visits are insanely expensive, so if she's not acting like she's in pain, take her as soon as your normal vet is open - otherwise, get her somewhere tonight).
What gets on my nerves is when people come on here asking for obvious advice when they know what the right thing to do is... You wouldn't necessarily be able to see if it was broken. She could have a hair line fracture on one, if not all of her toes.
The fact that she is not putting weight on it, and continuously licking at it (trying to heal it) means something is wrong. Why didn't your mother take her to the vet after she stepped on her?
she's putting weight on it today, she's kinda skipping on it.
i cant take her to the vet right now I don't get paid yet and all my money is going to college right now. and my parents wont take her to the vet bacause they are cheap adn think it's a waiste of money.
Find the money. Try and work out a payment plan with the vet. If it IS broken and you don't take her in, it will heal funny and she'll never walk or run on it normally ever again. Waiting more than 24 hours to have it looked at is a BAD idea.
And putting weight on it doesn't mean it's not broken - especially if she's still favoring it. Take her to the vet!
Part of being a responsible pet owner is being about to care for your pets in times of emergency...
Most definately find a way to take your baby to the vet. If you had a child with a possible severe injury, you would take it to the doctor wouldn't you? I know its tough to hear, but its imperitive that you take care of your baby.
You dont "have the money" so you are going to allow your dog to hop around with a broken leg???? So I assume if you broke your leg, you wouldnt go to the hospital???
Ask to borrow money from your parents. You can make up a contract and pay them back.
That dog is your responsibility. When she gets hurt, you are obligated to take her to the vet. If you can't, give her to someone that can. And sorry if that is harsh, but the dog shouldnt have to suffer.
Pinky, you should always err on the side of caution with an animal. Go to a vet who will make payment arrangements, but chances are, you won't need them, because an xray is'nt expensive, and as long as her leg is'nt broken, which it does'nt sound like it is, there is'nt a lot of treatment for it. Was your Mom wearing shoes at the time? It's a good sign that it's not swollen, or deformed looking, but still, best to make sure. Good luck with her.
Your first post, its quite obvious you dont want to take her. Should I take her to the vet just in case?.. then its "oh I dont have the money". Sorry.. we're not all gonna tell you its okay to leave her alone.
Are your parents not going to care either when you go off to school and have to leave her? Geez.
Even if she is starting to put some weight on it, you don't want it to heal wrong, she will experience problems with it being uncomfortable for the rest of her life. Or, god forbid it could be even worse where a blood supply has been compromised and she will end up having to lose the foot/leg because it was neglected for too long.
The other posters are right, you have to find the money. Sell your stuff on eBay if you have to. It's replaceable, Crystal is not. If you make the mistake of not taking her, I wouldn't want to live every day with that guilt haunting me...
I wanted it to be clear to all of you who think money is easy to come by that it IS NOT EASY TO COME BY!!!!! Sometimes things happen and there is no way to get money to help. But like the SMART PEOPLE ON HERE have said, just keep her off of it and WHEN IT IS POSSIBLE get her to the vet. This is supported by a vet people. i work with them!!!!
Since the OP posted this SIX months ago, i am sure that the problem has been long since solved. But then again, most of the SMART PEOPLE ON HERE can read the dates of the posts before replying to them...........
If you are a dog and your owner suggests that you wear a sweater, suggest that he wear a tail.
