I had a awsome 9 month old male english bulldog. I thought I have done a good job exposing him to new things and people, taking him to the pet store and daily walks at the dog park. He is usually pretty well mannered. But when I take him to my moms he is out of control! He is a dog I do not know anymore. He will not listen at all. I have tried all the classic things like keeping him on a leash and having mom ignore him until he calms down but those things are not working. She has a couple of dogs he use to play with but now they head for the hills when they see him coming. All my efforts to have a well mannered dog just fly out the window there. Any ideas on how to get his attention at moms.Eveywhere else he is pretty good.Listens well.
He pulls at the leash, which is really bad cause he is up to 55 lbs now, he is well trained on a leash, heels, stops at streets, exc.Jumps on the couch which he knows is a BIG no no. Jumps up on my mom which he also knows is wrong and he playfully attacks the other dogs. He just looses all control. He is like Dr Jeckle and Mr hyde over there.
i notice that you say he is well trained when with you. I can only presume that your mum doesnt own a dog and doesnt practice dog training methods? not as insult to you or your mum! but it has much significance in the matter of how your dog may behave around others..espeacially thise that you are personally close to? please let me know if I am wrong saying this. I am on a learning curve here and your response would be greatly valued..thanks :o)
very sorry! reading again without upmost keenest!!! lol!! your mum has dogs that are running for the hills!!! Do your mums dogs take their walk calmly, showing their attention towards your mum whenever your dog is not present?
The thing that strikes is the age of your dog...would that be when he is hitting adolesence?
My Tito would do this. He thought he only had to listen to me. he would disrespect everyone in the family when i was out of the room and as soon as i was in eye veiw he would look like he was saying "aw crap, she sees me...fine ill sit down now" I taught him that he is not even close to being the pack leader with any human. as soon as he meets someone i tell them to do some comands and if he dosnt i show them what to do to correct it. you could try the same with your mom. Tito now listens to everyone...well close to everyone :X
The truth is dogs have the mentality of a toddler, so no, he doesn't "KNOW" right from wrong like most people do. If a behavior gets a pay off, the dog will repeat it.If the dog jumps up on mom and she pushes him off or yells at him, the dog perceives this as attention. The dog is at a ranking stage as well, they tend to get a little obnoxious around this stage, just really pushing the limits.
When I look up into the sky, I think to myself, Wheres the ceiling?
