Hello, this would be my first post on this site. I have a miniature long-hair dachshund, whom is 9 months old and a very good dog overall. I know dachshunds are stubborn, but I just don't know what to do about my problem. My girlfriend and I live in a smaller cabin here in Alaska and he is very good in our house about not going to the bathroom inside. He actually hasn't had any accidents for probably about 4 months now. The problem is, whenever we house-sit someone elses house or go to my moms (she has many dogs) or anyone elses house, he poops everywhere many times throughout the day, if we are there for awhile. He never pees anywhere, he whines at the door to do that, but it seems to just be pooping and we cannot figure out why. My only guess is that all of the other houses are so much bigger that he does not know what to do and if this is the case, then how do we fix it?
if he is marking then he is very dominant as poop is usually followed by scratching paws for visual marking and additional scent from sweat glands located in the paw pads. does he appear to be dominant? does he urinate also..and if so does he squat or cock his leg?
Since you will know your little dog's bathroom habits quite well, by now, I would try and stay one step ahead of him. When he gets up after a night's sleep, take him out, until he goes. After he has his breakfast, if he usually goes then, keep an eye on him, if he starts sniffing around, spray him in the face with a water bottle and say OUTSIDE, firmly, and loudly. If you keep on top of him, I'm sure he'll get over it. Is he crated at night?
Well, in our house we pretty much used crate training to potty train him and just kept on it and he learned it very fast and yes, he is a very dominant dog but he does not urinate at other houses, only poop. We do know his habits pretty well, but that is what throws me off because he does it at random times at the other houses that really make no sense or have any pattern. Only sometimes we crate him at night and only at other houses. At our house, we never crate him at night and, like I said, he does perfectly fine.
I am guessing that the dog is somewhat stressed from being away from home. When I am stress about something I tend to get stomach cramps and well you know the rest. I would keep him crated in a separate room away from all the other animals. If this was separation anxiety, he would poop in your house when your gone as well.
When I look up into the sky, I think to myself, Wheres the ceiling?
