My puppy is 3 1/2 months now. He is doing very well at house training, great in puppy preschool, great at basic commands, but will not sleep through the night. He wakes up anywhere from 2-3 times a night to go outside. He had one episode of pottying in his crate about a month ago at night. I am now afraid to ignore his whining for fear he will go in his crate. What do you think, should I try and ignore him or continue to let him out when he whines. He does go to the bathroom every time I let him out. He eats by 6 every night, and usually poops and pees before he goes to bed at 10ish..any suggestions? I am very sleep deprived right now. Of course, my husband can sleep through everything so he never hears Max...Help...
I think this is a touchy subject because a.) each time you take him out, you reinforce he wants out, he whines, you come and get him. He will definitly pee everytime he goes out, even if he's not "full" because he knows he is going back in, so he will relieve himself. b.)there may be an underlying problem such as a UTI. I would probably take him to the vet just to double check that. Then, you will know....
I forgot to add c.) (LOL!) I think too sometimes when they are that young they go through stages, like kids. Tank is 6 months old and probably around the same time Max is, there were a couple nights that he didn't want to sleep in the crate - he wanted to be out with us :) So it may also be a case of what can I get away with.... but I guess that could fall under a.) !!!
I did just have him to the vet yesterday for his next set of shots. The vet said he was very healthy. I am kind of guilty because the when he wakes up at 4 after he goes out, I let him snuggle with me on the couch/chair and go back to sleep. Maybe tonight I will only wake up with him once...for a couple nights and see what happens. Do you think that sounds ok? I just don't want him to feel abandoned..or have an accident.
Just one point, your vet does have to actually test for a UTI, so him looking and feeling healthy is not a guarantee that, that is not it.
HOWEVER! From my experience you are perpetuating the problem by snuggling on the couch, of course he wants to be with you if he can, he's probably hoping for that the first time around :) If you don't want a problem, I suggesst you don't let him out or if you feel he really is crying to go out to pee, then let him out and then right back into the kennel. But that's just my opinion. I can say though that at his age, it will be either kennel or no kennel soon. If he just wants to go out to snuggle, he will soon continue to cry until you let him out, and then before you know it he's sleeping with you. Just my experience.
I know...you are sooooo right..I just can't help it..he is so cute and I love to cuddle with him when he is sleepy and not trying to chew my face off..lol..I am going to have to try and be firm. My only problem and the reason I let him out is so he will not wake up the kids. I would feel bad because they have school. (of course I have work). But, as a mom it is easier to deprive yourself of sleep vs the kids. I promise I will try it tonight..lol
I don't think it is a UTI, (only speculation), he isn't peeing frequently during the day. I will keep and eye on it though. That is a good thought. Thanks for the tips. Hopefully I can not give in to his sad cries tonight..
I got a little more sleep. Max went to bed at 10 after he pottied both. Woke up at 3:45. I got up took him out and he peed. He came in and sat in front of the treat and food cupboard. I picked him up and put him in his crate. He was so mad at me, but he only whined for not even 5 minutes. He slept until 5:15. (I normally get up around 5-5:30) I know he is on my routine. I really only got up once. I would like him to extend the 2 hours..maybe I am just wishful thinking. He is still a puppy RIGHT?..anyways thanks..
Well, he can definitely hold it all night, but he will probably get up at least once a night for a couple of nights until he realized you are not going to let him out and snuggle with him. I would probably let him out again tonight and then the next night or wait till Friday night if you work, and then ignore him. In a couple of days he should stop. I am writing this at 9am in my bedroom. Tank (6 months) hasn't been out yet since about 1100pm. Because I haven't gotten out yet, he knows its not time to get up. (Just FYI, he's still sleeping- not a peep!)
I am so jealous...no one in my life sleeps. My kids have always been early risers and now my dog. The only one that will sleep is my husband..I really don't mind. I like to enjoy my coffee in peace. I will keep up with it. I don't work this weekend so it will be the test..Thanks
And I've been very lucky, my kids are big on sleep, both my kids sleep 12 hours a night, and my youngest takes an hour nap during the day, but all that had nothing to do with me, my oldest slept through the night since I brought her home from the hospital. And yes, I realize I was VERY lucky!!!!! (Especially since I don't function on lack of sleep, myself!)
mastibull, We made it until 4:45...Yaaahooo!!! I have a busy morning with both kids and errands so I just sat in the recliner and drank my coffee..I hope this is working..I do work Friday, but I will try and let him go. This morning he sat on the step going outside and just looked at me for a few minutes. I don't feel he had to go that urgently b/c he would have ran right out and gone. I have to say, I was letting him play me. I couldn't help it b/c he is soooo cute and cuddly. I know cuddle when it is light out. I am learning...(I did the same with my kids, they ruled me as babies until I wised up.) I am learning though..Thanks again for making me stay strong...
I have 3 small dogs and they all sleep in bed with me and hubby and also our 2 cats ( thank goodness for a california king bed lol) anyways Louie is the youngest at 10 months old and Bentley is the oldest at 2 years and Daisy is over 1 year old. Most nights they still get me up between 3 am and 5 am to go potty, I just think its Daisy that gets everyone up and then i get up and take them all out to go potty. Which they always go. But Daisy loves it outside and most times think she just wants to go outside. I dont get up till 6 am but after they get me up im normally up for the day and they go back to bed. Like now- they were up at 4:30 am and i just stayed up and they are all snugged out here on their pillows. go figure. BUt i have tried to ignore them but they wll end up having a accident , at the least one of them. They have been doing this forever and i do think their bladders are trained how long to hold it for. Bentley normally doesnt get up to go out when daisy wakes louie up for them to go potty, but some mornings he does get up to go. Do you think tho that their bladders are just use to this early morning potty break? do i take them out to much and they havent learned how to hold it? they do hold it when im at work im only gone 6-7 hours a day, some times come home to a accident but not often.
I have come to the conclusion there is no pattern. I live in Ohio. We have had a couple of nice weather days and Max has been literally outside playing with the kids all day. He LOVES to play outside with the kids. This has been a lifesaver. He comes in and crashes. We have to wake him up to go potty before we put him in the crate. He will sleep until at least 5 now. (although not every night. sometimes he still wakes up at least once) All I can say is it has really helped playing outside or playing hard with him inside. He will crash and sleep good. He will hold it sometimes 8 hours in his crate when at work. I think they are out of habit. If we let him out one night..sure enough the next night he whines 3-4 times to get out. So, I have had to make a strict routine with him. Hope this helps you...
