I have a mini dachshund that just turned a year old in march and I am thinking about getting another puppy. I have heard that it Is better to do it when the other dog is not too old. Is this true? MIA loved other dogs but I am concerned with her getting adjusted to having another dog around. I have also heard that once you have one, the second one is easy. Any advice anyone could give me would be greatly appreciated!
I think it depends at what stage your one year old is at. A second puppy can be easier than the first as long as you don't have any issues still with the first. The second puppy will learn a lot from the older dog which can make life a lot easier. That being said..if the older dog is still not reliably housebroken for example,or has behavior issues it can mean double the work :) I think anyone that has more than one dog would agree that they would never go back to just one dog. It's great company for the older dog and two dogs are definately more fun than one. Most dogs at a year old are still full of energy and that gives them a buddy to burn off that excess with. I did a puppy a year for 3 yrs..that's enough puppy training for me lol. But they do pick up cues from the other dog so I found things like housebreaking and just basic commands were easier the second time around. I think you also need to take a look at how MIA is around other dogs she's met. Does she seem to like other dogs? Most people would say that if you already have a female you would be most sucessful with a dog of the opposite sex as the second dog. All three of mine are females and I've had no problems, but that's not generally the case.
