ok..well i have some sort of terrier mix. hes a male and hes like 5-7 years old roughly. we got him at the humane society. hes the nicest thing ever..but sometimes he can get a little out of hand. me or one of my family members will be sitting down relaxing and then he'll just come over and start barking uncontrollably..i dont know what to do. its been going on for a long time but its really annoying & i dont know how to stop it..do i ignore it or what? oh..and its kinda hard to ignore..ive tried it. he barks for over 10 minutes and soo i dont think ignoring is really an option.does anyone know what i should do? thanks.
When my dogs bark, I pick up a book, and slam it on the floor. Usually the phone book. The odd time that this hasn't worked, I have picked up the fly swatter, and slapped it hard down on a hard surface. None of my dogs have ever been hit, and certainly not with a book or a fly swat, but it works.
It sounds like the dog is trying to get some attention? At some point hes gotten atention for barking at you, and when you try to ignore him he tries harder. I woulod tell anyone that ignoreing the barking all together will slowly fade the barking.BUT, the barking will intensify, while the dog tries harder to get your attention. There are a few things you should start doing, find something else that gets your attention, praise him when ever he does something good even if its just sitting down when ever.Or lays down, or even eats his food, if he does somehting that you don't like ignore it.If you have to, when he barks at you just walk away. If you don't think you can follow through with all these things, when ever the dog barks at you, jump up and make the dog do 20 push ups, like a sit to a down to a sit to a down, 20 of them.Soon some dogs will avoid barking, becasue its to tireing:)
When I look up into the sky, I think to myself, Wheres the ceiling?
I have 1 dog who will sit and BARK, nonstop for hours, if he can't get a toy from another dog. No other toy will do. Saying anything to him is a waste of time, and distraction works for a little while.
I have had good sucess using a kid's squirt gun filled with water. You might need to palce several around the house so one is handy at all times. Spraying water in the face will interupt the bad behavior and give you the chance to give a verbal correction. I have also used a glass of water to stop a dog from continued barking while crated. I don't usually leave my dogs in a crate for very long but there sre times when it is necessary for their safety, like when the floors are wet and very slippery after cleaning.
