Hello, we live in a (rental) community that has special ordinances for fencing, since the property is a rental we do not want to spend the 1500.00 plus to have a fence installed, however, we are experiencing embarassing situations with our dogs running after people walking in the neighborhood. The first and foremost concern is that one of the dogs may get injured by a passing car or worse, and also, the embarassment of not being able to control my dogs, we have chins (3), 2 of which are puppies (6 mo (neutered male and 1 y/o intact female) that are just so excited, not trying to harm anyone, but will not listen when they are chasing after something or someone. We have looked into invisible fence, but that also ranges in the 1300.00, I looked at the wireless for about 300.00, that is a little more reasonable, but received confusing reviews. I do have a tie-out but they will not move on it...they just sit there in protest...could someone please offer some advice. I am confused and don't want to purchase something and regret it cause its not effective. But more importantly I do not want something to happen to my dogs, lastly I don't want to look like an a@@ running after the dogs, its not a pretty sight and they do not come when called....ugh! PS I would like a short term solution and a long term (which I know would involve lots of training)...THANK YOU IN ADVANCE!!!
You could try a Kennel for outside time. They range from 150.00 to 600.00 depending on how big and how tall and stuff. I have a 12x12 foot and it is 8 foot tall and i paid around 300.00 for it at Menards.
It sounds like tie-outs or trolley systems are your best options. Give the dogs a good amount of time to get used to it. Spend time out there with them at first. Give them things to do while they're out there.
The #1 thing I personally think people assume is that a dog gets used to things out-of-the-ordinary as quickly as people do. I've found they don't. You need to have patience and persevere. They'll usually get the hang of it.
i would buy a free standing chainlink or welded wire outdoor kennel so the dogs will have the freedom to move around and play with each other and not be tethered.your dogs aren't that large so a 5 or 6 foot tall pen either 8 feet by 12 feet or larger if you have the space would be plenty of room for them and they would have protection from larger stray dogs. if posssible the pen should be placed on cement so there is no danger of digging out and it should be located where there will be some part of it in the shade at all times or you can purchase a cover that fits over the top of the kennel and will help protect from rain as well as giving shade. i would never leave the dogs outside if no one is home and would put a combination padlock in the latch so no passing child could walk up and open the gate.
We do not keep the dogs outside, we just let them go to the pottie then right back in, we run them daily at the field where thet can run loose w/o the risk of getting into any trouble...a run or outdoor kennel is a good idea but I don't think it would work for us, we have a large yard but our house sits weird and there is really no place to put something like that. We have started today to just put them on a lead. I would love to get a wireless or invisible fence, but to shell out that kind of money and risk that is may not be the best option for us. Has anyone had experiences with the wireless fence? Not that my dogs aren't worth the money, but again we live in a rental and it is not "our" house which makes me hesitate to invest into something pricey. Thanks again for all your advice!
It is so funny that you wrote this today, I am also looking for something, I have two fox terriers, 4 months old and they will bolt if they are not on the leash or in a fenced in area. I was looking into a electronic fence - home depot has a wireless one for about 300 and the reviews look good, I just wish I knew someone that had it to "really" tell how the system works.
I am anxious to hear if someone has used any of the electronic fences and what they think
I bought an acordian type of pen that fold up, it came in a few sizes biger then what I bought. If you bought a couple of them and attached them you could make an enclosure in the back yard. And if you wanted to you cold fold them up and put them away.
When I look up into the sky, I think to myself, Wheres the ceiling?
Well, I had my (free) consultation today, there are a few options, the lowest price is 1200.00, it seems like a great idea, expensive, but great. The person also mentioned that you could easily do it yourself and they sell the kits for about 300.00 - 400.00. The worst part is digging the trench that the wire sits in. I asked about the wireless and they stated that it is good if you are only letting your pets right out and right back in (which is what I am doing) and that if it breaks in a few years that there is no warranty. My (thrifty) hubbie said that it is cost effective for us to do that and risk that we may have to spend 300.00 every few years as opposed to 1200.00 now for something that is more suited for a dog that stays in the yard more often. So, we are pricing it around, and will get it this weekend, I will give a review in a week to let you know...
