My 7 1/2 month old puppy is getting spayed next week and i am curious what i can do to make sure she is comfortable when she comes home...does anyone have any advice?? I am sure the vet will fill me in on most of my concerns but i know that all the great dog owners on this forum will also give me some great advice!!
All you have to do to make her comfortable when she gets home is just love her. When you first bring her home she will probably be groggy still. If you trie to pick her up, make sure you don't put any pressure on her belly. You want to wrap your arms around her legs so that her legs are on the inside. I'm not sure what the vet will give you in the form of pain killers for her, but you can give her childrens tylenol in the recomended dosage for a 2 yr old. Keep her playing down so she dosen't rip out her stiches. Other than that, let her be her. She'll be at 100% before you know it. My female pit was done when she was 6mo. and after a few days, she was back to normal. The beautiful thing about animals is, they don't feel pain the same way we humans do. Just keep her activity level down until the stiches desolve and she'll be good to go.
Personally, I would never give my dog ANY drug without speaking to my vet. Dosage also depends on the size of the animal, and what other drugs she might be taking. Please speak to your vet about your concerns.
Mostly just try to keep her inactive to allow for quick healing. If she is crate trained, you may want to leave her crated the first day or two. Sometimes with the pain meds, they feel fine and think it's perfectly okay to be wild and crazy.
Wishing her an uneventful spay and a speedy recovery!
