I' ve been meaning to ask this question for a while know but keep forgetting to, I haven't been on here in months. I'm sure some of u remember me, cuz I lost my poodle angel:( and then got my puppy cookie a little while after. I've never once seen a dogs eyes reflect a red color whenever light hits it or even at night. I've always seen that silver bright color reflect off a dogs eyes. Angels was a silver. Cookies is a bright red, it's very odd but kinds cool! Nothing appears to be wrong with hers eyes and her eyes were checked when we first got her n the vet never noticed anything unusual. Cookies eyes r a black, but at certain angles I will see her red eyes or whenever light hits them they reflect red and at night in the dark her eyes are bright red. I was just wondering of anyone alses dogs have the red effect or if this is just out of the ordinary? Does anyone know why her eyes would be red and what does it mean? She is a purebred 9 month old puppy, actually I think she is 10 months now. She is a miniature poodle and is a apricot color, almost a red brown color, she's a cutie. Thanks for any help or answers.
Oh and sometimes when I take her picture they are red. My friend and family keep asking me why r ur dogs eyes red? I googles it on my iPod and some story of a dog with the same red eye thing, but it was a ghost story, so that was kinds weird LOL
Hi! I remember you and I'm glad your back! How is Cookie doing? If you remember I was/still am thinking about another dog. I had it narrowed down to small longhaired breeds, until I met my brother's Standard Poodle. Now I'm consedering adding a poodle, but I have no idea what size. I love the Standards, but a smaller dog would be more practical right now. Maybe a Miniature?
I haven't noticed my dogs eyes reflecting red, but I'll have to pay closer attention. Maybe it has something to do with her lighter color. What color are her eyes? Are her nose and eye rims black or are they a lighter color? If there are no other problems I wouldn't worry about it to much. I know that's easier said than done, LOL.
When you take a picture, the reflection you see is from a layer of tissue at the back of the eye. This layer contains blood vessels, brown pigment cells and a shiny layer. When a dog has blue eyes or the color of it's coat is of certain red shades like orange, orange/brown or liver, there is very little pigment in the back of the eye, so the reflection is of the blood vessels and appears bright red.
Rottlvr, I remember you, that's awesome that you might get a poodle :) poodles r awesome! Cookie is doing good, she is such a happy little puppy, I think she is the only dog in this world who gets overly excited being at the vet and groomers, she just loves everyone. She's my little guardog too :) She has a ton of energy, she's hilarious she makes me laugh the entire time I play with her LOL and if I lay down in the grass when she's far away from me, then I yell her name and I'll see her come running so fast towards me and she jumps right on me and will start sniffing n licking my face, ha I always start screaming when she's running towards me. How are ur doggies doing? Oh and cookies eyes r black, her nose is black with some red or brown in it. And the rim around her mouth and eyes r black. Her paws r black with some white spots :)
K9lvr, thanks for explaining it too me, it makes sense now :)
Bailey and Harley are doing great! Same old, same old. Harley really enjoyed have my bro's dog here over the holidays. He doesn't get to play with big dogs that often. Bailey wasn't to happy about it. He doesn't like being pushed around or sharing his mommy, LOL.
If you like to read, Ms. Poster, I would like to suggest a book---Merle's Door, by Ted Kerasote--recommended to me by others here on this forum. It is a wonderful book with lots of information about the evolution of the domestic dog. There was some info in there about a dog's eyes and why they reflect. Besides telling the story of Merle's life, the author has lots of science and facts about the origin of dogs and their psychology. I love it and am almost finished. I know I will cry at the end!
A big thank-you to all who recommended this book!! What a great read!!
Outside of a dog, a book is man's best friend. Inside of a dog it's too dark to read!! Groucho Marx
