I have 3 1/2 week old pit bull pups and they have been nursing and using the bathroom fine until a couple of days ago. I noticed the mother was licking them to make them pee but not poop. I've tried wiping their butts with warm wet cottom balls but they still don't go. I made some mush for them today and I think one may have a used the bathroom and the mother ate it while I wasn't looking but I've been watching closely and they aren't going like they should be. Any advice?
If the puppies are nursing and appear to be normal and content (not crying or in obvious discomfort), then I would think that all is as it should be. At this age, mom is still a marvelous caretaker. Just because you do not see the puppies evacuating their bowels does not mean that they are not. Mom is an efficient "garbage disposal" and will continue to keep things clean for a while.
Pen2, your advice is well intentioned and correct, I just don't know if I would do that just yet.
