I recently purchase a new puppy. He is a 6 week old Airedale Terrier puppy. I call him Brisk, but his UABR registered name is Brisk Ballerina. I bought him only a few days ago, but made sure to register him right away. Anyway, I am having a bit of a problem housetraining him. He is a big little puppy. The pet store told me that his parents are the large type Airedales and he should weigh between 75-80 lbs when full grown. He is such a doll, but he thinks the carpet is the bathroom. I have a fenced yard, but I always take him out on a leash to walk for a little while, but just around the neighborhood. I've watched him when he goes to the bathroom, and I know all his signs, but I can't watch him every second of the day. It seems like he goes inside right after going on his walk! We stay out for about an hour at a time, so he has time to go to the bathroom. I always let him go on my property and take him to the same spot every single time, but he doesn't always go. He sleeps in a crate at night, but has messed his crate once. When he can't sleep at night I always take him in the backyard to go potty. His crate is big enough so I put a litter pan with sand in it at one end of his crate, and he has used that a few times. Could somebody give me some advice, tips, suggestions, or tell me when I'm doing wrong/right? Thanks in advance.
First, your little guy is way too young to be away from his mom and litter mates but that is a done deal. The socialization of waiting longer is important for a dog's growth.
Pups that young need to go out on a very frequent basis. There is a "formula" that slips my mind right now, but I'm betting it's every 4 hours at the most. He's still a pup and will have accidents.
I would not walk him in an area where other dogs are. He probably has not had any shots and doesn't have immunity to diseases like parvo that live for a very long period of time. Keep him in areas where you KNOW other dogs haven't been. After he's had his shots you can start socializing him with other dogs at parks or a puppy traning course.
I bought my mom a Shih Tzu and mom took the puppy out every 2 hours and it didn't take long before she was housetrained. As far as the crate is concerned, it sounds like the crate you have is too big. A dog will not usually go where it sleeps but if the crate is too big, it will. I also got my dog when she was only 6 weeks and that was way too early. She needed more time with her mommy and siblings but the person said she was ready to go. Big mistake. The lady I bought the Shih Tzu for my mom from would not let her puppies go until they were 11 weeks. I guess she was a smarter breeder.
