Hello. We have a 4 month old basset puppy we got as a wedding present about a 3 weeks ago from a breeder. She is a wonderful dog while she is sleeping. We are dog lovers and have a wonderful back yard for her and she is treated like one of the family. However, and I realize she is a puppy. She is really aggressive and eats like she has never seen food before. She is almost not playful anymore. She is for lack of a better word....mean. To tell her no is a joke, to try and get her to just try and behave is impossible. She gets plenty of exercise and as much attention as she wants. She stalks the other animals we have, and I am not quite sure what to do. I don't like scolding her as much as it seems we have to. I only crate her at night and while we are away, but I have to put her on a leash in the house so she doesnt get into everything. I could use any help or suggestions one might have.
Sounds like Lulu is getting confused about who is in charge. I would suggest you find some local obedience classes to start attending. In the mean time I would suggest some simple changes in her routine, for example make her sit and wait for you to put her food down for her, do not just put it down and walk away. You could do some hand feeding with her as well, it will help her see where her food comes from. I would suggest you take her for a good long walk about twice a day to help her get out some of her excess energy and have some private bonding time with you as well. Good Luck!
Also, when you leash her in the house, tie the leash to you. The dog will have to stay close to you, its good for your bond, and you can keep an eye on her. When she is bad, ignore her, completely, as soon as you see her do something good, praise her. obedience classes are good. Maybe she needs to get out or some good execise somewhere other than her fenced in yard and on a leash. A nice looooong walk helps every dog. You dont need to punish her, ignoring her will be good enough:)
