I have a 4 year old schnauzer/yorkie. She is really a great dog, but she is so nervous and always getting herself sick with colitis. She has a thunderstorm phobia, and when the garbage man passes that noise makes her nervous also, and she gets very depressed when i leave for work in the morning going under the bed and shaking. I dont know what else to do the ver wants to put her on a separtion anxiety drub called reconcie and I'm afraid to put her on it because it might give her seizures. I dont know what else to do. Should I get another dog for her? Are should i tried to put her on medication. Also she gets so nervous to the groomers and the dr told me to give her a xanax before she goes? Has anyone ever had these problems?
Sounds like you are dealing with more than one problem. If your dog has colitis you have to treat that condition in order to help her get proper nutrition and make her comfortable. The anxiety is something else. Has she always been high strung? You may not be able to change much but calming her down is a reasonable goal. Perhaps a combination of drug therapy and behaviour modification could help. You might consider some natural herbal "rescue" remedies first if you are hesitant about starting medications. I don't think another dog would help and could likely complicate your situation.
