I have pet insurance and it wasn't worth it the firt year. But this year it paid off. My dog had a torn ACL and it paid for $1200 of the costs. It looks like his other leg is going to suffer the same problem so I will be keeping it. If you get in on your dog when it's a puppy it is cheaper, and they won't cover pre-exsisting conditions in any dog. It depends on each situation, for my last dog, it would not have been worth it. I just have major medical, the insurance that covers everything is quite expensive and I wouldn't see the return on it based on what my vet charges. You can PM me for a name if you like, as I don't believe we are allowed to "name names".
I personally don't think it is worth the money paid. How much did you have to pay to get the $1200 covered? Most of the time from what I see, if you put that money in the bank instead of paying an insurance company, you would have the extra money needed. I have heard some real horror stories of being denied for stupid reasons, and being dropped as soon as you have a claim.
Just remember, insurance companies are not out to help anyone, they are there to make money.
I know a good number of people who have a savings account for pet emergencies where they place x amount in a month just in case. I think it's a fabulous idea.
If your dog is very sickly pet insurance may be worth it in the long run, but if not you've paid out a lot of money for security, but never make it back.
Also insurance companies are in it for the money, not to be helpful to you. I've known a few people through pet boards who had insurance through large seemingly reputable companies, had issues covered by their policies and chose not to pay out, or paid out far less than the plan covered.
Also reoccuring issues aren't always covered, or covered to the same amount each time.
Makes it good for things like emergencies of surgery, but not so good for many other things.
