My 11 year old lab who has always been very healthy just started having seizures. She starts by shaking her rear right leg, then falls very hard to her left side (yes, every time is the same). She lays there like she is paralyzed for about a minute. The last 4 or 5 times (she does it once, sometimes twice a day and it seems to be triggered when she gets excited...like when we come home), anyway, the last 4 or 5 times, she has started pushing her neck UP and it sounds like she is having trouble breathing. I run to her and lift her head and pet her and talk calmly to her. After a minute, she licks me and then lays there for another minute. During the seizure, nothing moves. There is no shaking, just a tightening of everything. The vet said he could give her medicine, but wasn't sure what it was.
I think I might need a new vet. He told me there was not much he could do and wanted to put her on medication without knowing what it was. Would the "Canine" disease make her eyes look like they were rolling inside the socket?
Don't get me wrong, I totally adore my baby, but I'm wondering if it would be better for her "being 11 1/2" to let her go rather than putting her through any painful episodes. It's such a hard decision. I don't want her to ever be in pain, ya know?
Your concern about her age and the issues she is going through is a valid one. It definitely sounds like some type of seizure. If the meds the vet gave you don't control it I would check with another vet. Then make your decision on whether it is time to have her put to sleep. It is always a very hard decision to make, but at least we have the option for our pets not to suffer in pain. Good luck.
