I have a toy rat terrier and he is 1 1/2 yr old and is skin and bones.. can someone help me out in what to feed him so he will gain weight. I have given him dads puppy food for almost his life, then i was giving hime moist and meaty just picks at it given him different can food and all he does is picks at them please help i dont want him to get sick on me...
Sometimes there is nothing you can do. I alway feed a premium food such as merrick, innova, blue buffalo, etc. I then let the dog self feed if possible. I love merrick, and for picky dogs you can ad water and it becomes a gravy. Having Aussies, I have had my share of skin and bones.
If they are healthy, and on good food, there isn't much more you can do.
At 1 1/2 years old, he doesn't need puppy food any more, he needs adult food. It's worse to give an adult puppy food than to give a puppy adult food. Bil-Jac is a very rich food and is notorious for putting weight on dogs.
I agree with Pen, you need to make sure there are no medical problems and make sure he is wormed properly.
Best of luck!

I had a dog that was very thin & not a big eater. The vet tested her & found she had food allergies, could not digest wheat & corn especially. He put her on a prescription potato fish dry food & her skin & coat finally got thick & shiny & she always ate her food well, plus I would cook her potato or rice with fish or chicken, which she loved, for an additional meal. Your dog is so little, it would be easy to just cook him some chicken with rice or potato. Also add some veggies & see what he likes.
