ok so i have this chihuahua who is almost 7 weeks pregnant(will be 7 weeks on Jan 16th) i took her temp cause shes been acting weird all day and i thought her stomach felt hard but im thinking it may of just been the way she was laying because its been soft for the past hour now that shes in a differant position. (hard when she laid on her back, soft on her side) anyways i took her temp and it read 98.2 and i took my other dogs temp wondering if it might just be the thermometer and his temp was 100.2 do you think i should be worried she is going into premature labor or do you think since my other dogs temp isnt normal eather that i jsut have a crappy termometer? its a digital, should i get a differant kind closer to her due date? i bred larger dogs a couple years ago(pitbulls but i stopped because there are so many in shelters) and this chihuahua was given to me pregnant and the temp worked every time to predict the bigger dogs going into labor but i read that small dogs this doesnt always work and she absolutely hates the thermometer...she is mad at me literally and is hiding in my sons bedroom with them... should i even use a thermometer later on when she gets closer to her due date?)
A dog's gestation is typically 55-60 days, so if she were to go in to labor, it would be early. However, in my experience with breeding Australian shepherds, when the gal's temp drops below 100, you should be expecting puppies within 48 hours. However, since you said you got her pregnant, how do you know for certain when she conceived? You calendar may be a bit off.
If in doubt, call your vet.
If people had emotions as pure as animals, our hearts would have to tripple in size.
It is my experiance with the mini aussies, that when the temp in down, it could go back up. When it is down, I always retake it later. If it is down and stays down, my dogs always deliver. It is always possible she is labor early. She could also be on a temp roller coster. I would keep checking it, no matter how much she hates it. Also give her a treat after taking it. It worked well the first few times for my girls. They don't mind it so much.
well its been a few days and her temp is still in the 98 range and my other dogs temp is still in the 100 range but she isnt having any contractions or anything, just a low temp so i think eather her temp is just low or my thermometer is off. shes comfortable and acting like her normal self so maybe shell have them when shes due... im hoping at least
Gestation for a dog is based on 63 days. Of course, each dog and each pregnancy is different and they do not necesarrily whelp on day 63. Basically expect anythng from 5 days early to 5 days late (58-68 days) ut to get your target date so you have an idea...it is 63 dyas from the day of breeding.
