Hi im new here.I have a 5 year old female minpin that weighs around 12-13 pounds.i understand that she is a bit overweight but is her life expectancy shortened?if so,by how much and what can i do to help?
Life xpectancy for a normal weight, healthy Min pin is about 12-15 years. Being over weight will shorten that. By how much? its hard to say. Her current health as well as just how overweight she is, if she is prone to anythng specific through genetics all play a prt. Getting her to a healthy weight will increase her number of years with you though.
I find that being slightly overweight isn't a really big deal. now you don't want a walking coffee table, and an obese dog is a problem.
With all the "obese issues" in the world today, everyone including vets thinks that a small amount of extra weight is a hugh deal. It really isn't. Alot of extra weight is the problem, and your dog should still have a "waist line"
What exactly are you feeding her. You may have to cut back on food as well. What about veggies. Have you tried green beans or carrots as a treat. My dogs love those baby carrots. I Have a client who had an extremly overweight dog. She cut his food down by 3/4, but then added green beans to it. He loved it, and really lost weight. He looks good now. he was an extreme case.
Here is an idea. See what veggies he likes. Lets say green beans. If you give him 1 cup of food. go down to 1/2 a cup of food, and ad 1/4 cup of green beans to his food. Then cut down on the amount of biscuit treats, ad a carrot if need.
I have breeding dogs, so I like my girls to be on slight heafty side. They still have their hourglass shape if you look from the top, but that way when they have pups, they don't look so thin.
i'm feeding her purina dog chow.i've cut her back to 2/4-3/4 cups of food each day.i have been doing this now for 1 week and i already see a difference.she had an hourglass shape before but it was barely visible.now i can see it a little bit more every day.she usually only gets a little bit fat in the winter because i live in a cold area and she doesn't like to go out in the cold.she is always thinner though in the summer.
In figuring proper weight for a min pin, how she looks is your key. The breed is generally a thin built breed anyway, so can be overweight without you really seeing it....like a Italian Greyhound...they are skinny, ribby in theor proper breed weight...most people who do not know the breed would turn you in for cruelty thinking your starving them, lol.
Proper weight will vary for pinheads based on height, built, boning, etc. Show me some pics of her and I can give you an idea.
BTW...a tad bit of extra weight in the winter is usual since they dont go out and run as much. Playing fetch and things inside will help fill in on that. Start like you have with a small cut back in food and and more excercise...it takes longer for weight to come off than it des to come on! Women know this for fact! lol
