We have a 3 year old collie mix and he cause trouble. He is a great dog and we love him to death, but he is a barker and eats toilet paper and everything on the table. We have been looking for another dog so he can have a friend and get a little energy out during the day instead of being so bored with himself. What type of dog would best suit him, and would getting a new dog even be a good idea?
I dont think another dog will solve anything, I think it will cause more problems. Have you thought about giving your collie activities to keep him occupied during the day? How about stuffing kongs with portions of his daily food rations? Or Tug-A-Jugs? Buster Cubes? I recommend getting several of them and rotating them through the days/weeks so that he doesnt get the same ones everyday. Keeping him mentally exhausted will go a long ways to keeping him out of trouble while home alone.
Keeping active dogs busy, both mentally and physically, can be a lot of work. YOU will probably need to take a more active role in this. I don't think attempting to "out-source" this work to another dog will be effective. Instead, it will probably compound your problems.
I have to agree with everyone else, another dog is probably a bad idea. Like most herding breeds, Collies need alot of mental and physical stimulation. Beside all of the kong, and other puzzle toys mentioned above, have you ever thought of getting a dog walker during the day? Does he play ball or freesbe? As a breeder of mini aussies, I know how trying they can be if not properly excersized. I would also suggest not allowing the Collie to have run of the house if he is tearing/chewing up things. Besides the fact it isn't good for them, an emergancy surgery could be tough on the wallet.
Keep him confined if you can not watch him, and give him plenty of mental toys to keep him busy.
