Hi! I have a 1 ˝ year old beagle mix named Sapper. She has been fixed and current on all shots. She is on heartworm prevention and flea/tick control.
Our problem started Friday. I left the house at noon and returned at 4 to find 3 spots where Sapper puked and then she did “number 2” on the floor, which is very unusual. We consider her to be 100% house broken, as this is the first accident in at least 9 months. Her puke was the normal yellowish color and there was nothing noticeable in it. Her “number 2” was normal as well. I assumed she ate something that did not agree with her and decided to watch her that night. She did not eat much Friday night but was still drinking and acting completely normal.
*Saturday morning my boyfriend and I were getting ready to leave the house and she puked again after I made her drink some water. We decided to take her immediately to the vet. Blood was with drawn and Sapper was given an injection to help with any nausea she could have been experiencing. The blood test came back and nothing was abnormal, liver, kidney’s, white blood count, everything was fine. Sapper did not have a fever either. I was advised to try to feed her some white rice and boiled chicken. This was successful, however she didn’t eat much. Again today she was acting normal, running, playing with our other dog.
*Sunday morning Sapper had a smaller than normal bowl movement and hardly ate any of the rice/chicken mixture. Every hour I would coax her to drink some water and gave her a little bit of maple syrup because I was worried about low blood sugar. She acted normal today too.
*Monday morning we decided to take her to Daycare (she goes 2-3 times a week). We informed them of our situation and they kept an eye on her. She acted normal all day, full of energy, running and playing. They were not sure if she had a bowl movement or not. I was able to get her to eat some chicken and a few pieces of a plain pork chop(no breading or spices)
*Tuesday she went to day care again, same report. Sapper did eat some chicken Tuesday night and I made sure that she was drinking water.
*Today (Wednesday) I picked her up from daycare and was told that she was not acting like normal. They paid extra attention to her and she did not have a bowl movement and would not eat for them. I immediately took her to the vet and they have withdrawn more blood. It is being sent out tonight to be tested. She did not have a fever, the Dr. palpated her and she did not appear to be in pain, anywhere. Stomach is not swollen or bloated, does not appear to be distended. Tomorrow morning I am dropping her off for X-rays and so the Dr. can monitor her.
What is baffling is that up until today she has acted normal, the first blood test was normal and she doesn’t show any sign of pain. Do you have any recommendations? Anything I could suggest to the vet to look for or try?
Could she be having a reaction to the flea or heartworm meds? when did she have them last, and how close together are they given. I prefer to stay away from both, as they are chemicals. According to an article I saw on pawnation, in 2008 there 44,263 cases of reaction including vomiting, seizures, hair loss, and also 600 deaths.
You you have put the flea treatment or gave the heartworm recently(just before issues started), you may want to talk to your vet about the dog having a reaction to the meds.
Thanks for the response. The last time she was given heartworm and the flea/tick treatment was the 3rd of this month. However I am very interested in the problems these could cause and will bring it up to my vet, along with doing some research.
Did the vet do a fecal test? There are some nasty bugs that dogs can get that a fecal will show! Also what kind of food are you feeding? I just went thru all of my dogs being sick because the food I got was expired by three years. They where throwing up and losing weight. It took 200 dolars and x-rays to see that there was a lot of gas built up in one of my girls intestins. The vet gave her a shot for nasea and sent home metronidazole and cerena to give her also blan diet. It took about a week for her to start getting better. Also on a different thread on here people are saying that they are having trouble with wellness dog food making there dogs sick.
She has not done a fecal test! I am adding that to my list to ask the vet tomorrow! I also never thought about dog food expiring, Im going to go check that in just a minute. Thanks! Glad your babies are feeling better!
If it was given on the 3rd, then I am sure the meds are not the problem.
how often do you offer food? Sometimes that can get an acid tummy, and not want to eat. They then throw up bile (yellow stuff in tummy). Have you considered giving her some Kopectate(sorry I murdered that one), Imodium, pepto? I do not what to give or not to give, so don't self choose, ask your vet which acid reducer is best for dogs. I know one has issues years ago, but can not remember which one.
