hi i'm new to the site .my female pit bull just had 11 pups on thursday and i'm concerned about a few things. she was growling in the whelping box this morning and the vet said that was normal. she is telling them it's not time to eat now but she is sick today and doesn't want to eat or drink much. is this normal?
if she is not eating or drinking, that could be a sign of a problem. did all the placenta's pass? I would have a vet check her out just in case.
As far as growling at the puppies, I don't see how that can be normal. Protecting her pups and growling at you does happen with some new mothers. I would keep a constant eye, and check on the pups. Make sure they are eating enough, and gaining weight.
As far as her not eating or drinking, I would take her to the vet asap. Even and emergancy vet. If she retained anything, and it is causing and infection, they can go down hill quickly. Good luck
I have one momma that growls at her pups all the time! I think is her way of teaching them! She is the best momma dog I have ever seen she is very protectve of her pups and tries to hide them from me. She is now retired but was a great mom. I would not be to worry about the growling as long as she is still taking care of them licking & feeding. You said she is not eating that could be the sign of infection! Have you felt her nipples to see if there is any hard knots in them? It could be mastitis! Also take her temp. If it is over 102 there could be a problem and you will need to get her on meds right away.
her temp was 102.3 it was a real hot day yesterday. vet said that her milk came in because it was day 4 and she is changing the way she feeds cause all her teats may not have milk. Today she is eating and drinking so far. all pups look great and she is cleaning them, laying with them. he said the growling is her way of letting them know they did something wrong.
