hello. i recently adopted a shepherd mix at a local humane society. if you've read some of my other posts that's about this dog, you would know some stuff about it. anyways, for the first few days, she has been a great dog. the problem is....she is starting to bark and whine whenever my dad or I is not around. She is 2 years old, so I want to break her out of it before it turns into a major habit. I don't want to stop barking forever, just at times when she really doesn't need to bark. Although, she does have some hound in her because of her face and her personallity. For example, whenever she sees and hears squirrels, cats, or any other wild animal, she starts to go off; and hounds are hunting dogs, so i really don't know what to do. any ideas or tips???
Why Abuse An Animal? What Have They Ever Done to You?
She may be suffering from a bit of Seperation Anxiety when you and your dad are not around. It is a very common behavioral issue in adopted dogs. You can try googling for it and see what you can do to help her over it.
This i a very hard situation to deal with. I am dealing w/ it right now w/ my 5mo puppy i adopted. Her problem is when she wants attention. I just don't know how to handle it, I think if you ignore them then when they are trying to get your attention fora good reason like when someone is in danger, they aren't going to bark because they are gonna think you are just going to ignore them. So I just don't know.Good Luck though!
Your dog is either bored or displaying symptoms of separation anxiety. The first thing to try, IMO, in either case is distractions. Provide her with interactive toys and chews while you're away. Frozen Kongs (check out their website) can also keep her entertained. If she's not crated, hiding tiny treats around the house can also keep her attention.
If the distraction method doesn't do the trick, as Scout wrote, try googling separation anxiety. There's a ton of information about it on the web.
Is this what you are talking about? Can I ask you why you bought a muzzle to train your dog with? What kind of training are you expecting to do with this muzzle? I'm sorry but I have never heard of using a muzzle to train a dog with so is it some type of training beyond basic obedience training ?
