I am the owner of an older chihuahua mix and noticed yesterday that she was not feeling well. Because she is older, she sleeps most of the day anyway. When she goes potty, her bowel movement is not all liquid but more soft and stringy, she has not eaten and she vomited when she drank alot of water at once.
I cannot afford to go to the vet and I am thinking of just waiting it out and see what happens. She walks and goes outside on a leash fine. I was hoping of any suggestions as far as food is concerned to maybe get her to eat. Her regualr food is kibble and probably is not appealing to her.
How many bouts of diarrhea and vomiting has she had ? When was the last time she vomited ? Does she normally drink a lot of water or is this new? How old is she?
Generally speaking when an animal vomits, just like in people, you want to not feed them. I would withhold food fro at least a few hours after she last vomited. I would leave out ice cubes in a dish instead of water so she cannot drink a lot all at once. If she doesn't like ice cubes then only put very small amounts of water in her dish so she cannot drink a lot all at once. If you have pedialyte at home that would be even better for her since she is also having diarrhea. Pedialyte will replace the electrolytes she is losing from the diarrhea and the vomiting. If she hasn't vomited in at least 6 hours I would offer her tiny amots of boiled, unseasoned, chicken breast and see if she keeps it down. If she has kept it down for a couple of hours, then offer her a tiny bit more. If she seems to be tolerating that then keep it up every few hours for a couple of days.
If she continually vomits and cannot hold anything down, I'm sorry but you really need to bring her to a vet. Since she is older it could be a few things that could be causing this and some of them could lead to death if just left to watch and see what happens.
