My min pin is 2 1/2 weeks short of 16 weeks. We have an appointment for him to be neutered next week (sooner rather than later, because we also have a bitch from the same litter). His testicles have just recently made their appearance, but are still some distance from the scrotum. Does anyone know how long this process takes? Any chance they'll be in position before his surgery? Can they be removed where they're at (now that they're outside the abdomen)? Any advice will be appreciated
Most times their testicles are fully descended by the time they are 6 months old. I personally would wait another month to see if they descend on their own. WHile yes they can be removed if they are either in the abdomen or the groin area, it is much more expensive to do so and they are under anesthesia a while longer. Your female cannot become pregnant unless she goes into heat first. She is likely not going to go into heat until she is closer to the 6 month age mark or later so if you can I would wait.
Better idea to wait to neuter. Other post was right on all accounts. Another item to add is the fact that they are seeing more dogs with bone problems in those that were neutered early. Reason is...It affects the growth of bones. Hormons have to do with growth. If you neuter too early bones grow at different rates. You could end up with loose knees for instance. Wait closer to puberty. This info is fairly new to some people. A good vet, if he is truthful, will agree and tell you to wait awhile. In all of my years being a breeder and exhibitor with several different breeds, I have never had a female come into heat at 6 months. Generally 9 months or later. Anything is possible. Fact also is you will have about 9 days after your female comes into heat before she will breed. Its not a deal that the day she comes in that she will breed that day. Hold off for awhile.
