I love, love my 1 1/2 year old mini male tri. He is an angel inside and for an Aussie he is very social with strangers and other dogs. We live on a corner with a fenced yard, however, and he goes bananas every time I let him outside (all hours of morning and night). He turns into this dog from hell that I am sure all my neighbors now despise. He barks like he is defending us from everyone that walks down the street (even if it is a woman with a baby carriage). It is really embarrassing and it give him a bad "rap." He is such a good dog!
Do I need to take him out on a leash every time he goes outside?(ugh...I live in Michigan). Should I buy one of those vibration collars? We tried a cheap one that made a small sound when he barked. It stopped him from barking, but it freaked him out so much that he went under my porch and hid. I had to crawl under there and get him out- he was shaking! So I fear that the self administered vibration collar would have the same effect!
Is he outside by himself, or are you out with him? It is very possible he is protecting you guys, or he could be board, wanting to play or say hi to people. Mine bark at cars, people, other dogs, etc. The need to learn to listen to you. I go outside with my dogs almost everytime they are out. I tell them quiet or no bark and they listen. Unless someone is actually in my driveway.
Aussies of any size are wonderful family companions, and should beable to meet strangers and not be aggressive. The breed lives for their people, and needs alot of playtime with their people. They don't do well if they are left outside for extend periods of time alone.
