I have an overweight dog...I know him being over weight in the first place is my fault, but I realize now I need to correct the problem. What is a good brand of diet dog food? Buster is a lab/boxer mix (we think) and is at least 7 years old. He is a rescue so we don't even know his age. He has arthritis and I realize that we need to get some weight off of him.
Most posters dont agree on a specific brand of dog food. What brand do you currently feed and does that brand make a diet/low calorie food? That would be best as it would not cause alot of digestive upset staying within the same brand,
Any of the better brands you find at a Pet Store will be fine, though remember, alot of weight issues are more due to portions over style.
Have you tried cutting back the amount you feed of his regular food? It takes more time to lose weight than to gain, so may take time to see a change.
If your dog will eat Green Beans (can or frozen) those work well as an addition to the regular food to act as a filler so they are feeling full, yet not getting calories from it.
Increased excercise....slowly advanced due to the arthritis will also be needed....is he on any medication for the arthritis?
Vets also have prescription diets you can get, though be ready to spend alot more than you would elsewhere.
Life isn't about waiting for the storm to pass. It is about learning to dance in the rain.
Buster has a lot of digestive issues so I will start adding green beans as you suggested rather than change his food. He always acts hungry and I hate to cut his portions any more. They have been cut to the bone, but I will cut a little and then add the green beans. We only give him carrots as treats. He is on meds for his arthritis per the vets directions. I honestly can't say what they are, I am at work right now (shhh!). I have to admit his activity level is not where it should be. It is just too darn cold to take him for walks right now as I do in the summer.
Instead of trying a diet dog food I would go with a senior or less active formula of the brand you are already feeding. What brand are you feeding now? A lab/boxer should be eating ~2 cups of food a day. How much is he getting now? Are you feeding him 1x or 2x a day?
It is crazy cold out but you could exercise him in your home. Throw a ball for a 1/2 hr or so a day or leash him up and walk him around in the house. If you have a treadmill he can use that as well.
How much does he have to lose? Weight loss in dogs is a very slow process. A 2-3 lb weightloss in a month's time is a good amt/rate.
He gets 1 1/2 cups in the morning and 1 1/2 cups in the evening, so I am overfeeding. I will cut it down to 1 cup am and 1 cup pm. We do not have a treadmill. We go to the gym in the winter. This weekend it is supposed to get up to almost 40 which will feel like spring. He will not chase a ball in the house. I have tried it repeatedly and he just goes and lays down. I will do the walking in the basement with him.
thanks for all your suggestions!
I will also add some green beans so he doesn't feel so hungry all the time. He needs to lose about 17 lbs.
Our weather here in NJ is supposed to get in the 40's as well. It's going to feel like a heatwave!lol
I would def. cut the food down to 1 cup twice a day and supplement with veggies or fruit. I would stay away from canned veggies due to the lack of nutritional content and the high salt content. Frozen or fresh/raw would be healthier for him. Too much salt is as bad for dogs as it is for people.
Hey Scout, me and you are neighbors. I am in central PA. Tomorrow we are taking he dogs and spending the day OUTSIDE. I can't wait.
I will let you know how he does. I will give him fresh green beans. He will eat them. He eats everything, which is part of the problem. I have to put the cat's (Black Cat) food as well as the other dog's (Zoey) food up or he will eat it when our backs are turned.
We have allowed Zoey to eat whenever she wants but I will change her habits also. She will be given her food and then if she does not eat it, it will have to go up until next feeding time.
Zoey is a black and tan coon hound and german short haired pointer mix. She weighs 48 lbs and could stand to gain a few. But, she runs every second she can. I wish I could get those two to kind of meet in the middle. LOL
It is going ok. i cut back his food to 1 cup in am, and 1 c in pm. The pm feeding, I give him green beans. His treats are now carrots. Zoey has been a little more painful. She is getting the hang of her new schedule. She is eating it when we put it down now.
Buster acts hungry all the time which makes me feel bad, but I am being tough!
