We have a 130 lb. 5 year old Chesapeke Bay Retriever. The vet says he has trouble with full annal glands, so we take him in about once a month to have them...purged. Max is an awesome retriever/hunter with a very nice demeanor except when he starts atacking his backside. He gets so angry at his backside that if you didn't know him you would think he is extremely dangerous and get away from him.
He has these fits after hunting, hiking, training, and eating.
Full anal glands can be a problem for lots of dogs and if not emptied frequently can turn into abcesses and ruptured glands. Generally the pressure exerted as a dog has a BM is enough to allow the glands to express naturally. For some dogs this is not the case and therefore they need to be done manually. There doesn't seem to be a clear reason why this problem occurs in some dogs and not others. Adding fiber to a dogs food can help in some cases.
Why this happens only to your dog after hunting and running is a mystery.
How often should anal gland expression be done? I have little dogs and one seems to have a problem with this. I mainly bath him and groom him myself but I haven't gotten the hang of expressing his glands yet. So I have to take him to someone from this. I never discussed it with my vet before. I tend to take him to a groomer once I see him doing the carpet scoot dance.
Upon your death your dog will mourn you until the day he dies; your cat will play with your toe tag as they wheel you out ;)
I would rub some ointment on his anal area to soothe it. I have to take my dogs every month to have his anal glands excreted too and it's no picnic for him either. Maybe he needs to go every 2 weeks instead of every month. A good ointment to use is Bag Balm that you can get in any pet store and the good thing about this is you can use it on abrasions, etc...it's pretty safe. Humans can use it too. It will soothe him, I'm sure.
It's really up to your observations of your dog to decide how often he needs to have his anals excreted. I have one that goes every 2 weeks and another that went every 4 before she passed away. Just watch for scooting, tail chasing, increase in licking that area,
