my best friend's fullbred min pin just had puppies back in march. I picked out the cutest of the girls. which so happens to be the runt. Im taking her in on sunday and was wondering if anyone knew any good tips or tricks to help my baby girl gain weight she is significantly smaller than her siblings and it kinda scares me a little. shes six weeks old and still fits in the palm of my hand.
Picking out the runt could be a problem. A puppy that had a problem in the womb usually catches up. A pup that does not gain may have a very serious problem which is called a "liver shunt" Check that out on line. There is very expensive surgery that is risky and usually really does not cure the problem. These pups will never do well. They will have a shortened life. Take the pup back and get a healthy pup. An x-ray should show the problem. Some times the signs are not too bad at first By the time the pup is 10 weeks symptoms get worse. Loose stool, skinny and may vomit. Heart breaking to say the least. This happens in all breeds. 40 years ago I had a Dalmatian litter with one pup this way. Ten years ago I had a Boston in a litter and then a pup in a Bichon litter. Have the breeder take the pup in for the xray to have it checked out. They can also explain if in deed this is the problem. Good luck.
