I would love everyone's opinion. New to this forum with a new 5 month old black lab. He is high energy and my backyard (nor my aching knees!) allows me to let him run the way he needs to. We have a great dog park with 3 acres of open space. He loves it there. The problem is that now that he is not neutered, any dog automatically seems to growl at him even when he is in a submissive position. What then happens is he takes this energy and redirects it at me by high energy nipping and this week attempts at trying to mate. I'm keeping him away from the dog park until he is neutered and my vet said 5 months is fine. I'm not breeding the dog nor care too much about the standard, but do want him to still have the more stalky look of the English lab. I specifically chose an English labrador breeder specifically for their look vs. the American Lab. Any advice? I feel he is showing signs related to hormones, but don't know how to redirect it with a high energy dog. What's also important to me is that he can be properly socialized around other dogs but this seems to be impossible based on how the other dogs approach him. They also take his jumpiness and rolling around as unfriendly but everyone keeps telling me it's because of his scent and is threatening to other dogs. Advice?
