Im a firm believer in the crate, my labs were taught that way and so will any other dog I ever get. My issue is I adopted an older male min pin yesterday, I know, not long to have him. Anyways I crated him last night no issues took him outside before bed and stood in the yard for over an hour. He didn't go. At all. We weren't playing, I walked him around to the bushes and stuff.
Put him to bed, got up for work four hours later and took him out again for another hour.
Still no pee.
I am able to take him to work with me, brought him a small fleece blanket and laid it on the cement floor for him he happily jumped on it, and moved it around before proceeding to lift his leg and pee all over it. I even Gave a sharp no, and it didn't stop him. He just looked at me and peed like he hasn't peed in a week.
After correcting him and taking him outside he came back in and instantly went iver to the blanket, pawed at it and laid on it.
The logic behind crate training is they won't pee in their sleeping area, but here he is making his pee blanket a bed.
My question is how should I approach potty training? I'm kinda against diapering and pad training.
Once he started peeing it's hard for them to stop, but maybe by the time he needs to pee again he will remember your correction. You seem to be doing the right thing. Correct bad behavior, but more importantly, reward good behavior. Keep taking him outside often and when he pees there throw him a party! They seem to be very eager to please those pinschers.
