My Boston puppy Popeye is 9 weeks old, and still has his puppy soft spot on his head. I have been doing some reading about this and have discovered that it is a condition called open fontalles or something of that sort, that affect toy breed dogs, especially ones with apple shaped skulls. Popeye is a little apple head! Anyone with little breed pups have this problem? Is it anything to be concerned with and will it ever go away? I'm taking to the vet this week for his shots I plan on asking about it then, but any input from ya'll would be great too!
I think it will go away. Also, earlier, you asked about showing. I show Chihuahuas, and I know the person who owns & handles the 9th ranked Boston in the US. She is one of the nicest people I have met, and I have known her even before she started showing. And with the apple head, don't show that Boston. They like squarish heads, and square bodies.
Thanks! I am hoping this will go away soon! It dosen't seem to cause any problems, so I guess he is o.k. Thanks for the showing info too. I didn't know the thing about the apple heads being un desirable. Oh, well I think Popeye is too much a runt to be a show dog any way. Mabey I'll have better luck with some of my other dogs, who knows if I decide I really want to do this mabey I just buy another dog to show! At least that can be my excuse.
Boston Babies, I own 4 chihuahuas. All are fullgrown and the 2 that we show still have softsopts. Sometimes chihuahuas develop softspots and they keep them for the rest of their lives. It's just a chi thing.
Ariel is an applehead too. It's normal. It may go away and may not, but it's nothing to be worried about. Ask your vet anyway for peace of mind. But don't be overly concerned. You don't have to "do" anything. Have a good day!
