My female JRT (Cookie) is in heat for the first time she's nearly 8 months old. I noticed this morning that she had a bubble of sorts coming from her well you know...Anyways I called the vet he says it's normal and it's just a membrane? But she has not passed it yet? Is it normal for females to do that on their first heat? I never noticed it with my other female dog. She hasn't started to bleed yet she's just really swollen. Help please!
Hey there. No, she won't pass the membrane but it will eventually shrink back up. I know of some dogs that will prolapse a good portion of the vagina when in heat (although a large factor in this is being overweight). I have spoken to our Vet about this kind of thing and she said that as long as they can urinate freely it is not something that will hurt them. Sometime Preparation H can reduce the swelling. Hope this helped.
Thanks lalayla that's kinda what my vet said to but ya know it still kinda freaks me out. She was supposed to be spayed already but she had a cuple of ear infections that lowered her immune system so my vet recommended i wait.
MY DOG IS GOING THROUGH THE SAME THING I DIDN'T KNOW WHAT IT WAS, I THOUGHT THAT IT WAS HER UTERUS OR SOMETHING AT FIRST, AND I STARTED TO PANIC.....BUT WHEN I READ THIS ARTICAL I WAS RELIEVED, I STILL HOPE SHE PASSES THROUGH THIS SUCCESSFULLY.
I might add, if you are concerned about the mess, pampers and onsies! I actually use them for housetraining. My dog likes to go inside when it rains, she is a rescue and I am still working with her. In the mean time, I went to the dollarstore, bought pampers and onesies, it works like a charm, and I have piece of mind! I know menustration is a bit different, but I think itd work for you too. you just clip a small hole for the tail, and the onesie keeps the pamper in place!
