My boyfriend and i are still looking for a breed we can both agree on. I would love to get a min pin but I dont know much about them. Everyone knows that jack russels are quite the shedders! Are Min pins the same way, with the short brissly hair? We are looking for an inside dog basically but do have a fairly large yard for the dog to play. I would love if anyone has any info on these dogs...and maybe some pics??? :)
My aunt raises minpins and I absolutely love them. Both breeds are pretty hyper. But as far as shedding, I'm not sure if my aunt just vacuumed all the time, but anytime we went to her house, there was never hair anywhere that I could see. I have heard a lot of things about JRT that would make me not want to own one. I have heard they are extremely hyper. I have heard that they dig all the time (because they are terrier). I have heard that they are extremely intelligent, but can be somewhat stubborn. As far as minpins, my aunts barked a lot. I don't know if they are all like that, but they would bark whenever anyone came in the door. So if you want a dog that warns you when someone is at your house, minpins are good at that :) If I were you, I would contact a breeder of both dogs. Say that you are torn, and would like to see the puppies and parents to make a decision. Make a day out of it. Go to the minpin breeder and spend time talking to the breeder and playing with the puppies and parents and see how they act. Then do the same with the JRT.
kali-I would like to know about your Rhodesian Ridgeback. I think they are such sleek, good looking dogs. But I have read that they have a tendency to be aggressive, and can be a "one owner" dog. How is yours, and have you had him since he was a pup?
I think that my rhodesian is the bestest! I have had her since a pup. She is not a pure bread though, she has a little bit of rotweiller in her. She has the basic build and characteristics of the rhodesian but is partly black like the rottweiller. She is not aggressive at all. She's actually quite the opposite. If you yell at all or raise your voice while in the same room as her she almost cowers like she was beaten previouly (which she NEVER was). She absolutely loves people and other dogs. She's 7 right now and is still as playful as when I got her as a pup. She's my Baby
I have a little min pin just three months old and yes, they can be very hyper. She is very sweet most of the time but we are going to go to puppy classes so I can teach her to calm down when she is hyper. She is not perfectly potty trained yet but we are getting there. We are using wee wee pads since we take her to work and she cannot get outside as often and there is too much going on outside and she gets too distracted to go. She also has no use for the grass when it is cold and wet. Otherwise, she does love the outside. I only noticed her shedding once. After she had a bath, my sister had on a white polo and got some short little black hairs on her shirt. Other than that, we have not noticed any. Be sure you have time to teach this puppy. They are very curious, athletic and get into everything. She seems to be very curious so I will personally get help in getting her to focus enough to learn some manners when we have visitors. She gets extremely excited over new people. It is very cute but hard to handle some times. I think this breed will take harder work to train but they are very agile and intelligent and I think she will be a really fun dog. We already get such a kick out of her. Once she knows the rules, I think she will be a wonderful dog.
catlover, a minpins ears are cropped. They have big ears because they were cut that way. They also have their tails docked. My minpin had his ears done when we got him as a 10 week old pup. They are sweet little dogs. They love people. I found our Max harder to train then the big dogs I have. They are a big dog traped in a mini body. Good choice if you choose one. Ours is now going on 12 in November, and I wouldnt trade him for the world'
You mean their ears are even BIGGER BEFORE they're cropped?!!! I'm sorry, I'm really not making fun of the dog. I obviously don't know much about them. I actually think they're kind of cute, in an odd sort of way. They're kind of mini dobermans, aren't they? If so, they are definately a better looking version. Just got to say, after all this pit bull bashing, I would choose a pit bull over a doberman any day, lol!
