Ok, so I was at the vet today to get Kiba's DVLP (distemper booster), the vet told me Kiba was old enough (Born July 12, '04) to get her rabies shot. And that they also had a shot (new maybe) to prevent Lyme disease, even though it was a 60% effectivie or something. So I'm going back next week to rabies (didnt have enough $$ in budget for those two shots, plus heartworm, and frontline.) How much does it cost youse people for heartwarm? For one does here was only 2.38, I dont know if I'm being jipped or if it really is that cheap. EDIT: Kiba was at vets 4 weeks ago, she weighed 5.4 lbs, now she weighs 8.3 lbs. Is this normal for a puppy of her size to gain so much weight and a short period? Thanks!
what kind of dog is Kiba. all of my pits just about doubled in size inbetween vet visits for their puppy shots. also i believe they got their rabies at about 4 moths old (i think). it was at the time they got their last puppy shot.
We are going in for all of this next week with Bella so I would love to hear opinions on this is well. This is what I have planned so far. Either: Revolution (covers flea, heartworm, ear mites, sarcoptic mites and american dog tick) or Frontline (fleas and ticks) and Heartgaurd (heartworm, roundworm, and hookworm) Is tick prevention enough to ward off lime disease? Or is there something separate for that. Im also planning on getting the Leptospirosis vaccine because she gets in any water she can get to.
Lyme Disease Shot is to prevent your dog from getting bit by a tick. Ticks carry lyme some dogs can die from it. I have all my dogs receive lyme shots. We lost our two year old dobie to lyme. You must have ticks in your area because they wont give them to a dog unless they are at risk for it. Edit to say; tick prevention is only to keep them off, not to prevent them from getting lyme
we are going for vaccines on sunday. its rabies, lyme, distemper and soemthing else i think. maybe kennel cough? although i thought this was just pups- she's getting her yearly boosters. it will be $99. plus $50 fror advantix. my vet will match any online price, so i get 12 heartgard tabs for $26. petmeds.com sells the genericfor that, and since the vet doesn't have generic, they give it to me for the online price. i would definately get the lyme disease if your dogs spends alot of time outdoors, camping, etc. actually, i'd get it no matter what- lymes disease can be awful.
I just took Greta in to the vet yesterday, for her last weekly recheck. Shes all done with the ear tape! Yeah! They look great! Anywho,'...... she had her first Lyme shot at 4 months. She will have to go back in one month to have the booster, then each year they get a booster. It isnt cheap' I was lucky I was there for her ear's. It was $37.00 total just for the Lyme shot. $36.00 for the shot and a dollar for medical waste disposal fee' (toss out the needle) They did not charge me for the visit, Usually its $22.00 for the visit, then the cost of the shots. Next month when she returns I will have to pay the $22.00 and the cost of the shot. Its costly but well worth knowing if you find a tick on your dog, that it wont get Lyme and die like our Gwenna did. My husband pulled two ticks off our dobie Gracie in the last week. We have been checking them daily now for them nasty little bugs! Where we live I think its more important to have the Lyme shot then it is for the rabies shot.
How old is shadow now? Greta weighs 18 'solid' pounds as of yesterday at 4 months old. She gained 3 pounds in one week and has doubled her hight, from when we first got her. Her first vet vist the day after I got her home, she was 6 pounds at 8 weeks old. My vet said she getting solid' Little piggy'
harleygirl...I'm sorry to hear about Gwenna. Thank you for all the information. As we plan on taking her camping up and down the East Coast I think it's best if we go ahead and take all the precautions. Where are you from? Shadow...Yay! I've been wondering how big she is now. So 40 lbs at 7 months? Bella is a pretty solid 20lbs now at 4 months. I keep hearing conflicting information about how big she is gonna be. Vet says we are just gonna have to wait and see. Could be from 50lb to 80lb. Also remember how your trainer said to tell people she was mixed with something else, I noticed that my vets office put her down as a Lab mix and left out the Pit part. This was after the vet said she definately had Pit in her. >> Sorry this got a little off topic, but I've been waiting to talk to Shadow for awhile.
Thank you, BellasMommy for the kind thought. It was very hard to lose a dog to Lyme when every other thing we could have thought to do was done. Good food, Great vet care, The best of the best for them! Even harder when it was something as simple as a shot, to have saved her. I would clean toilets all day long if I had to, just to make sure they have their Lyme shots! I live in Connecticut, Lyme is named after a small town here in Connecticut down by the shore, where Lyme disease was first discovered.
Thanks again for the info! We live in Western Ny, but I have family all up and down the east coast. Now that we have her, we plan on bringing her on all of our outings. Since we love camping, we figure that is the best way to go. I remember getting checked for ticks in VA and occaisionally finding one when I was growing up. Yes prevention seems priceless for her.
