Where I go to school in northern Illinois it gets bitterly cold and snows alot. Right now, since I do not have a backyard I take Ace and Summer for about 4 walks a day and keep them outside for about 35 minutes each time. It's starting to get colder outside now (plus they just got fixed) so I've been taking them out only twice a day for about a half an hour each time. Is this enough? I feel bad because Summer will stand on her back legs and look out the bedroom window outside. Ace doesn't mind at all, he probably could care less if we went out at all. I feel bad for Summer, though. I am going home this weekend so she'll be able to out in my yard at home every 5 minutes if she wants to & run around with Abby. But during the week when there is no yard should I take her out more? How much is enough? Thanks =0)
are you concerned they aren't going outside enough for exercise or for pee breaks. i would think smaller dogs could get just as much exercise inside as outside. but if maybe for potty breaks one more trip wont hurt.
lol Scout- I just mean to run around. Summer scratches at the door to go to the bathroom about a million times a day. That is why I feel bad. I think she is scratching to go walking and I just wait for her to potty and I bring her back in. Ive been walking her twice a day lately, but I think she wants to be outside more...but it's getting cold! (Ace pees in the litter box still)
If they don't mind the cold, I would go ahead and bring them out. Maybe put little doggie sweaters on them. And once they slow down and start shaking, bring them back in. They probably don't understand that it's getting cooler. So once they play for alittle while, they will probably be like, 'okay, this is way too cold for me!' and want to go back in so you won't have to stand out there with them for 30 plus minutes.
oh okay . i find that my guys love to be out more when it gets colder. it's like they have come alive and have boundless emergy, even in the snow. our dog prinny loved to just sleep in the snow, scouts first snow was last year and she wanted to be out all the time. maybe once it starts snowing in illinois summer will change her mind. poor you !! i think the cold is worse for us then it is for them.
