hi everybody....i was wondering if you think it is too late to house break puppies (6 months) after they have had too much freedom outside? my pups have been able to go in and out since day one and needless to say they LOVE being outside when it is warm out. they are very potty trained as long as they are confined to the living room that is next to the dining room where the patio door is. they go to the patio door and scratch to go out but they dont always go out to potty...sometimes when they scratch to go out they just want to go out to play! do you think that may of learned that outside is for playing more so then for pottying? i have been limiting their time outside and standing out there with them till they are done pottying and then making them come right in. still they trick me and want to go out and i cant take the chance and not let out to have an accident. so my question still is: do you think they can learn that outside is for "potty"? or have they had too much outside freedom now to learn that? they go out very well but if i let them in another part of the house they will pee there too so i put the kabash on that!
i think your dog can very well learn to go outside. potty training is play on a instinct. dogs have an instinct to keep their den clean. the dog must learn the house is the den. this why crate training works. crate=den. you can train this dog. you can potty train a 10 year dog.
hmmm, it does not feel like i got the right answer so i will try again. my pups have access all day long to the outside via a doggy door. they have had this doggy door since i got them when they were 10 weeks old so they got play outside constantly since it was so nice out side and they both played together all the time unless i had to leave then they went into the crate. so now they use the doggy door all day to go out and potty and if the door is closed they scratch at it. however, if they are not in the same room as the doggy door they will not go to it they will go where ever they are at. sometimes i let them come upstairs with me for a short moment and they go just that quick upstairs but if they had been downstairs where the door is they would of went outside instead. i am wondering if they have too much freedom to the outside to learn that the outside is for going potty and not playing....does that make any more sense, lol?
Why dont you try locking the doggy door. Then when they need to go out they have to scratch at the door to let you know. When you take them out do it on a leash. That way they cant play. take them over to where you want them to go to the bathroom and wait until they go potty and then let them off the leash to play. Thats what i did with my puppy and she picked it up really quick.
