For My Babies
Never, ever, ever assume what has never happened before will never happen at all. I raise Basset hounds, well, I have one litter a year, and become attached to the pups quite easily. They are my babies, my sweethearts. This past Tuesday was a hard lesson to take, but taken to heart, and will be forever etched in my memory. My work schedule allows me to be home at intervals throughout the day, so I let the babies come in the backyard to play while I am home to watch them. I also have a beautiful multi level coy pond in the backyard so I have always been a little leary of the pups being around it, but in 3 years have never had any incidents. Until now. I forgot to put them up one afternoon before returning to work, only to come back and find 3 of the 4 remaining pups drowned in the coy pond. How stupid I was. How naive and thoughtless. Three of my babies gone forever, and something I could have easily avoided. PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE take heed when you have open water and puppies. Do not ever let this happen to you. I will never let it happen to me again..I will build a puppy yard before I have any more litters. It was a devistating experience of which I take full blame. I am sorry, so sorry my sweet babies. Please forgive me.
