The Saluki dog is a unique-looking dog that, when perfectly groomed, is a beautiful animal. Although unknown to many, they are very popular in many parts of the world. They are probably one of the oldest dogs in the world, having been around for over 5,000 years. A recent study showed that they are almost considered as antiques based on their DNA, which showed them as one of the first breeds of dog to come from wolves.

The Saluki was chosen by the Southern Illinois University to be their mascot for their sports teams. In honor of this, one of the newest Amtrak trains that services Illinois was given the name, "Saluki". This is the first Amtrak train named after a dog. The Saluki is also the mascot for the Red Hill High School in Bridgeport, Illinois.

Did you know that the Saluki dog barely sheds at all, and is described as one of the cleanest dogs around? They are given a description that is fitting only for them in Arabic countries. The average dog is called "kalb", which means dog, but the Saluki dog is called "saluki" because this is their royal homeland. They are also considered as royalty because they are such clean dogs and are valued very highly both emotionally and monetarily.

The Saluki is such a fast animal that it is said they can run faster than any other land mammal on a three-mile run.

They are a dog whose body is so long that it is not unusual for them to have large litters of puppies. Whereas many dogs that same size have litters of 6 to 8 puppies, a litter of 10 puppies is very common for the Saluki.

The Saluki dog is used for advertising for different products such as the Shepheard Hotel bran cigarettes. They are also shown on the boxes of Nava Reds, which is a cigarette company in Northern California.

Replicas of the Saluki dog are shown on many Egyptian tombs from 2100 BC as well as in ancient tombs in the upper Nile region. They may be considered new breeds in some areas, but are old familiar and honored dogs in many other regions.

The Saluki was held in such high regard in Egypt that their bodies were made into mummies - the same as the Pharaohs.

This dog is known for his great hunting ability because of his extraordinary sight, as well as their stamina in being able to withstand many rough conditions.
