Because the smooth fox terrier is a dog that requires a lot of attention due to its active nature, you will want to be sure that you will have the time to spend with the smooth fox terrier as they can become aggressive and display inappropriate behavior. One way of ensuring your smooth fox terrier will receive the right attention it needs is by playing with it, especially if it is a puppy. From a young age the smooth fox terrier is a very lively, active dog that will always have the energy and the drive to play for extended amounts of time, whether it is with you or with another dog. That is why it is important that you prepare yourself by reading and studying about the smooth fox terrier if you want the best relationship between your smooth fox terrier and your family.

One of the most important ways of giving your smooth fox terrier the attention it requires is by playing with it whenever you have a free moment, or set aside a time when you will play with your pet. Just like any other dog, the smooth fox terrier, has an inner clock that knows when you are due home and will become very excited around that time, awaiting your arrival to greet and play with you. You can play with your smooth fox terrier by taking it out into the yard to play fetch, or you could wrestle with him. If you wrestle with you dog, it is advisable that you keep this to a minimum as the dog can turn aggressive and may quickly turn from play mode into aggressive mode and accidentally harm you or a member of your family.

Smooth fox terrier love playing with toys, balls or even the garden hose. If you find that your dog enjoys the water, then playing out in the yard with the sprinkler may be a good exercise for your smooth fox terrier. The smooth fox terrier is just like a child when it comes to playtime, as it will jump about and get really excited at the idea of chase or playing with the ball and will start to bark non-stop until the game is started or the ball is thrown. You will want to limit your play time and make sure it is the same amount of time each day, and eventually your smooth fox terrier will know when it will be time to go in. You will also want to prepare your smooth fox terrier for the end of playtime to help them wind down by throwing the ball less or making fewer gestures that may excite your dog. The more time you spend playing with your smooth fox terrier you will find games that it enjoys.
