Showing a horse like the American Saddlebred is easy to do when the very breed itself is known for gravitating to and excelling at presentation. They are commonly seen leading the parade with their high steps and mesmerizing gaits. As they are a naturally graceful breed from birth, it is quite easy for the Saddlebred to put on a show. On top of this, they not only have a temperament that is easy to work with but a character that keeps them fun and lighthearted. Of the many that have chosen to work with this breed, there is a common concurrence that the intelligent personality of the American Saddlebred is simply a joy to work with.

As many horse enthusiasts will agree, there are a number of reasons for showing a horse; and many of these reasons are as individual as the riders and handlers themselves. However, when owning a breed such as the American Saddlebred, showing in any discipline usually means being the center of attention. Because all focus is on the horse and its rider, it is important to go into an event completely and fully prepared. Those who choose to participate in a discipline of show with a breed like the American Saddlebred will never get away with giving a less than stellar effort. The breed simply loves to compete and a rider will need to be as dedicated as their Saddlebred in every aspect of training and competition.

Depending on the discipline one is competing in, both the horse and the rider will need the appropriate dress, saddle and tack. The horse should be in excellent physical condition, well groomed, steady and calm. The rider, whether male or female, will need a neat and tidy appearance as well. Clothing that is inappropriate or overly distracting is frowned upon. Whether competing in dressage or pleasure events, a horse should have good training and preparation. Preparation can consist of everything from grooming to diet and regular exercise. Horses and riders new to competing should stick to smaller events to learn the ropes. Smaller events mean less pressure and a chance for the horse and rider to have a good learning experience.

When showing the American Saddlebred, it is the rider's responsibility to arrive early and explore the ring beforehand. This leaves little room for surprises during the competition. Arriving early also gives enough time to get the Saddlebred sufficiently warmed up. Riders should check with event officials when warm ups are allowed and where it is appropriate to do so. It is the responsible and honorable rider who will compete in a clean and honest matter without resorting to measures deemed as cheating. Unfortunately, cheating in a number of ways has been known to happen from time to time. This can lead to being banned from ever being allowed to compete ever again. No matter what the event, it is always important to be clear on the rules and regulations. This will keep a rider from accidentally getting themselves or their Saddlebred disqualified.
